Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks, by Bille Hougart

In this, his fifth book, Bille Hougart continues in the tradition of the 2011 publication, "The Little Book of Marks on Southwestern Silver." The new book (7" x 10") is compact and portable, and lists 225 new silversmith entries, for a total of 3,425 individual entries for silversmiths, designers, guilds, trading posts and other retail shops. There are over 4,000 photographs or hand-drawn images of marks, including over 500 new images of marks. It features the marks of past masters such as Kenneth Begay, Charles Loloma, Preston Monongye, Joe H. Quintana, Ambrose Roanhorse and those of numerous contemporary artists...and, some old mysteries have been solved! The entries cover all Southwest tribes, but also include many non-Native Americans working in the "Southwestern style." In addition to the main section on hallmarks, there are discussions of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, the United Indian Traders Association, Native American silver guilds in the Southwest, and an overview of the history of marks on Southwestern Native American silver. There is a separate section on Native American silversmith symbols. The book is comprehensive and user-friendly --- fully cross-referenced and indexed for rapid and efficient searching. This book is a must have for collectors, dealers, appraisers and fans of Southwestern sterling silver jewelry and silver crafts.

This is the second edition of a hallmarks book which is essential for collectors and dealers. Bille Hougart performs a valuable service by providing pictures of countless hallmarks used by the Native American and Southwest silversmiths and also provides supplementary info of great value. Stamps of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board are identified, UITA stamps are identified, for example, and many of us struggle terribly with these. There are many treats like this which are so important.

Don't underestimate the pictures of the actual hallmarks, because a hallmark can be described as an "S" for example but there are countless S's and you don't know if you have that artist's "S" if you can't compare yours to the picture. The author also seems to gather his info from multiple sources, so he checks and counterchecks his information, which not all authors do. His work is of more validity than most because of his dedication to more scholarly standards.

Another reason I recommend this book so highly is that there were errors in his previous edition which were troublesome, and which are corrected in this book. I can't say there are no errors in this one and when I come across some I'll edit this review, but what I can say is that if he corrected prior errors in this one we should be able to count on his dedication to accuracy to continue in future editions.

I railed against paying full price for this second edition, but when I received it I felt it was well worth the price. This is a hefty volume, filled with value. Compiling it was a heroic effort indeed.

LOVE this New Version!
By AMAZONV
Been using this one for several weeks now, & out of the mountains of Native American artist hallmark reference books I own, it's the BEST! Loads of info, easy to navigate thru, I've just really LOVED and enjoyed owning this book so far..in my opinion, even the pictures seem to be clearer in this version! I use my reference books until they are literally ragged, so I sure wish it would've been available in a hardcover! A MUST have for any Native American Jewelry collector!

The best book for identifying hallmarks used by current artists and silversmiths
By jessix
PRO: This is the best reference book I've found for identifying current Native American hallmarks. This reference differs from the others because it identifies the marks used by newer artists and silversmiths, many of whom made items selling today on-line such as those on eBay. Previous reference books have few identifications of second or third generation silversmiths. Most identify items made up to 1980. This book identifies items made past 2000.and is mandatory for anyone buying or selling Native American items on eBay if they wish to identify the makers. The combined identification average of items I looked up in other well-known references was 15-20%. This little non-pretentious book identified 65-70% of items I searched.for.

CON: The binding of my early edition completely let go, releasing all the pages. I reluctantly purchased the newest edition which to my knowledge doesn't include more hallmarks, cost 3x more than my original, and may have a similar binding problem - to be determined at a later date. Proof of it's value is that I paid $45 for this second but securely bound (at this time) version. My first copy cost me $15.00.when it was originally released.

A possible factor in the failure of the binding was the numerous times I opened and closed the book while searching to identify my hallmarks.
