LOVE! Highly recommended!

As a parent who loves to do projects and experiments with my kids (anything to get them learning thru hands on materials!) and has tried and bought LOTS of books over the years, this is one of my favorites! Tons of pictures to help you with experiments, easy to follow steps, simple explanations of why, a large variety of projects divided into categories. The back of the book has a great resource to help you plan a week of experiments/activities, printables, and a list of where to find additional project extensions on the web to further an experiment or idea. There's also a few blank pages in the back which is perfect for a book like this so you can jot down some notes about the experiments (what worked best or how to do it smoother next time!). There are a few things you have to purchase for some of the experiments, like thermochromic pigment for the color changing play doh (I found it here on Amazon for about $18) and 3 volt coin batteries and copper taping. But, they are all worthy purchases for the awesome project you're producing. I've been learning right alongside my kids! This book has been great for my 4 year old but the experiments are still new and fun for the 8 and 11 year olds I babysit. Absolutely recommend!

Fantastic Book!!!!

I received this book two days ago and it has been an amazing hit at my home. My three children (ages 6-8 years) LOVE it!!! The directions are clear and straight forward, the images are beautiful and the variety of activities is wonderful. As a parent, I love that the necessary supplies are largely things that are found around my home. In addition, the activities are rated by difficulty levels and have time suggestions. It is a wonderful tool for children/parents who love STEM/STEAM. I am so happy to have purchased this book and highly recommend it!!!

More of a standard craft book

It was good. But I found pretty much all of these projects online for free already. I was hoping that this book would do a better job at helping us parents and educators come up with better terminology to use with the kids on how STEAM applies to each of the projects. Like explain the scientific method as you go. Why did what happened happen? What is the vocabulary?
I find that this is more like a standard craft book with some nice ideas. But I don't find that many kids would gain more STEM knowledge from this approach.

The translators have artfully preserved the author's "peasantisms," in appreciation of the distinctive voices of his characters. This new translation of a 1953 collection of stories (plus two not previously published in English) from the acclaimed Mexican writer draws readers in with its gritty realism. Each story is told in the first person by characters such as priests and guerilla soldiers, living in the deeply religious and violent countryside of revolutionary Mexico. Rulfo's characters are imperfect, jaded, and often withhold their confidences until the end of their tales, giving the story the air of a confessional. The harsh and beautiful landscape of the Mexican countryside is personified, with stories taking places in towns like Corazón de Maria, translated as the heart of Mary, though in the war-torn country, God is decidedly absent, leaving characters with quiet resignation or haunted despair. The drama spans from the personal, such as in "Talpa," in which a man drags his dying brother on a long pilgrimage to the Virgen de Talpa with the intention of stealing his wife, to the epic, as in the title story, in which a rebel soldier recounts his five revolutionary years fighting Mexican troops under the command of Pedro Zamora. What is remarkable about these sketches is that the characters are rendered with deep honesty; their faults are highlighted, celebrated in a way that is reminiscent of Chekhov's peasants. Yet there is tenderness to their portrayal that seems to say: these are what real people are in their entirety. This brand of honesty is striking, and stimulating. (Sept.)

About the Author
One of today’s preeminent essayists, cultural critics, and translators, Ilan Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. His books include The Hispanic Condition; On Borrowed Words; Spanglish; Love and Language; and Gabriel García Márquez: The Early Years. He is the editor of The Oxford Book of Jewish Stories; The Poetry of Pablo Neruda; the three-volume set of Isaac Bashevis Singer: Collected Stories; Becoming Americans: Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing; The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature; and The FSG Book of Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry.

A prominent writer, editor, and translator, Harold Augenbraum is the Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. He has published six books on Latino literature.

Juan Rulfo's one and only novel. The other one he supposedly burned. His short stories, The Burning Plain, is also very good. For Pedro Paramo, you will need to be very attentive to the plot and the development of the characters and the quick narrative shift. One of the masters of magical realism.

The Great Voltaire Entertains and Stimulates

One of the funniest and easiest to read of the great books is _Candide_ (1759) by Voltaire. Voltaire's sharp wit within a fantastical plot was aimed squarely at the fashionable philosophy of Leibniz who maintained that no matter how bad things might seem, "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds." It not only took down that philosophy but aimed barbs at government, armies, religion, and more, and because of its supposed blasphemy it was banned, although the world has laughed at it ever since. (It was even deemed obscene and prohibited from import into America as late as 1929.) Voltaire was pushing seventy as he composed his _Pocket Philosophical Dictionary_, but he wasn't letting up as he got older. He realized his time was limited, and he also realized that the time for governments and religions to wring his neck was limited, too. It will be the 250th anniversary of the _Dictionary_ in a couple of years, and Oxford University Press has brought out a new translation by John Fletcher. This work is still dangerous. It instantaneously entered the Vatican's list of banned books, and it was there until the list went defunct in 1966. Voltaire's anger against religious folly and the extremes to which faith takes people, transformed into irony and laughter, burns brightly still, and students of the current works of Dawkins and Hitchens will do well to have this one, too. It is not just outrageous; it is enormous fun.

In the useful introduction to this current volume, Professor Nicholas Cronk reminds us that Voltaire knew exactly what he was doing when he brought out the _Dictionary_ anonymously. He was right to be coy about his authorship, although it was an open secret. In 1776, the chevalier de La Barre was brought to trial for impiety and blasphemy. His possession of the _Dictionary_ was given as evidence of his sacrilege. His tongue was torn out, and he was burned at the stake, along with the outrageous book he owned. The _Dictionary_, released here in a translation of the first edition (to which Voltaire was to add as the years went on, making it not so much a pocket volume), consists of seventy essays, some less than a page. Voltaire loves to cite superstition and inconsistencies within scripture, or give examples of religious intolerance, and his performance is brilliant. Voltaire not only knows his Bible (he is especially withering on the Old Testament), but he draws upon his enormous knowledge of classical authors; this is surely among the funniest of erudite writings. Voltaire would still anger the creationists who hold sway in American religious thinking. In his chapter "Flood," he lists the impossibility of Noah's flood "defying the laws of gravitation and fluid mechanics and betraying ignorance of the fact that there wouldn't be enough water to do it." But then he slyly says that no such facts can cast doubt on the veracity of the Bible's story, but quite the opposite. "That was a miracle, so must be believed; and, being a miracle, it's not subject to the laws of physics." Voltaire will distress the _Left Behind_ believers and other millennialists. He points out that the ancient Egyptians believed in a thousand-year-reign, and Virgil wrote about it, too. He says that the source of the Christian version, the Book of Revelation, has been considered mad or inauthoritative from time to time, but "The matter has now been cleared up: the Church has decided that Revelation is incontestably the work of St. John, so there is no appeal." He would not at all find it surprising that many people nowadays feel that the End Times are upon us: "Every community in Christendom has applied the book's prophecies to itself: the English have found in it the revolutions that have plagued their country, the Lutherans the upheavals in Germany, the French Protestants the reign of Charles IX and the regency of Catherine de' Medici. They are all equally right."

Though the critique of religious beliefs is spirited and even biting, Voltaire was not all criticism and had sensible opinions about morality. He strongly believed that international trade was the best way for all faiths and nations to cooperate. He knew virtue as doing good to one's neighbor, and that it had nothing to do with sanctity. "What concern is it of mine whether you're temperate? You're just following medical advice; you'll feel the better for it, and I congratulate you. You have faith and hope, and I'm even happier for you: they will grant you eternal life. Your theological virtues are heavenly gifts; your cardinal virtues are excellent qualities that will guide you through life: but they're not virtues as far as your neighbors are concerned. Wise individuals do themselves good; virtuous people do good to all of human kind." And if doing good to human kind includes making them laugh, and making them think, and trying to make them a little more tolerant, then Voltaire in this cheerful, sparkling, biting volume shows himself virtue personified. His brilliant ideas on show here about many subjects, from circumcision to cannibalism to Moses and more, still have punch, and the world is sadly still in need of this sort of punching.

Be careful what you're getting

The Oxford World's Classics edition is the first edition of 1764. If that's what you want, splendid.

However, take note that the Penguin Classics edition, translated by T. Besterman (Voltaire's biographer and editor of his correspondence) is more inclusive: "a translation of everything that Voltaire himself printed in successive editions under the title of Dictionnaire philosophique or Dictionnaire philosophique portatif."

Thus for instance, the Oxford edition doesn't include the articles on Abbe; Job; Julian the Apostate; Priests; Prophets .... The Oxford is perhaps 150 pages shorter.

Nowhere do the translator or editor explain why their edition is preferable to Besterman's, which they do not even acknowledge that I can see.

Katrin and Yuri Shumakov - a stellar artist-duo, professional origami creators, who started their origami journey in France in 1989 and since then they unfold this art in a heretofore unseen way! They have created amazing paper world ORILAND with incredible fantasy Kingdoms that impress with rich detail of majestic castles, abundance of paper flora and busy life of little paper dwellers. Their newest kingdoms Toy-ronto and Albuquerque combine fantasy and reality together, presenting a whimsical artistic rendition of iconic sights of these cities. Another beautiful and elegant aspect of origami they brought to life is ORIBANA - a marriage of two Japanese arts: Origami and Ikebana. By combining these remarkable art-forms, in early 1990s Katrin and Yuri began to create paper flower arrangements in paper vases and thought up a distinctive name for it - Oribana. Since then they designed more than 50 charming oribana-compositions with a broad variety of origami flowers and vases. Being prolific origami authors they created more than a thousand of origami designs from simple forms and cute characters to complex dinosaurs' skeletons and architecture that all have a distinctive Oriland style. Psychologists by education, Katrin and Yuri have studied how origami helps children learn. Both these projects were acknowledged as high quality creative, educational and fun websites for children and adults. Yuri and Katrin have written more than 30 origami books and instructional CDs, and their works have been exhibited in many countries including several venues in the United States, France, Spain and Canada. The Shumakovs also extend their artistic talents to the realm of photography and music. Katrin is a winner of the Toronto Photo Contest 2010. Yuri is enjoying music composing and sound design. Very Useful. I use these patterns a lot. A favorite origami book.

Of all the Origami books I have, I use this one the most. Business cards and Customer Loyalty cards are always overflowing my wallet, and stressing my pockets. These handy organizers solve that problem. I even have color coded one's for plumbers, roofers, A/C repair, auto mechanics versus business experts, restaurants, shops, etc. Also these make a handy little gift add-on for almost anyone. The "windowed" ID holder turns out perfectly with a 7" square, and some if the others are best folded with standard 8.5 x 11" paper. Sometimes I use a very heavy paper and pre-crease with a alternate stick pen that is out of ink, or a ball-scribe. A bone folder (see scrapbooking or bookbinding tools) may be a help with this. I originally purchased this from the Oriland Website, and I am thrilled to see it is now available on Kindle e-book.
