On Again Off Again
By Elizabeth Bennet
I was given a copy of this book for my honest review. The story is written in the first person and it definitely left me wanting Jake's POV at times but then Fate, which is second in this series, does just that. The h, Maddy, was a sensible girl who acted much older than she was. I related easily to her. While all her friends are sowing their wild oats she wants to enjoy her youth as long as she can. It made her very unpopular with her friends. I am more of an old fashioned romance gal and so I found it hard to relate to the modern feel of this book.

I respected Maddy for clinging tight to her beliefs and how hard it must have been to stand out in her group of friends. Jake and her have their fight and you see the darker side to his personality. He taunt's her at every turn but you can tell there is more to it. Ryan who is written as Mr. Good guy ticked me off when he shows up at the after party. Did anyone else feel that way? I mean, yes, he believes they're together now but without any words in that direction, and how about how he just shows up and presumes she's not with someone else? I mean I know in his mind he thought that they were serious but it was her senior prom come on! He knew he wasn't her first so IMO he set himself up for his embarrassment.

I know that's harsh because he was a good man which is why all the bed hopping got under my skin. I know it's the modern theme that people mess around with one another with no emotion involved but I have to play Maddy in this train of thought because to me when you jump in the sack with this man and this girl how is a reader to perceive the couple as something special? I feel it stole the romance between Jake and Maddy after they finally find each other she turns to Ryan and does him. No, there was no commitment but IMO the heart should have told her it wasn't right. Then there is Mark she works it out again with Jake and she falls for Mark. It broke my heart because I wanted more romance between the main couple. Jake was sweet and let her go because he wanted her happy that was romantic but he should have fought harder and wooed her. I know he wanted to make his way in the world which was the point.

Even with all my doubt and critiques I want to know Jake's side of things and for her first attempt I feel the author did a good job. She is young in her writing and there are minor errors but I think she has promise if she finds the right group of followers. I typically like my H/h to be exclusive once they meet and especially after they sleep together. Call me old fashioned it makes the couple shared passion seem real when they are ruined for all others. That is not true for all readers and so if the things I have mentioned do not bother you I think you would enjoy the book. Enjoy!

well worth the read!! HEAVY STUFF TO GO THROUGH AT YOUNG AGE...
By Fite11
This book was a sad/sweet Romance book... It is right on the line of being NA. I would say, this would be ok for mature YA.. tough call..
Nicole Dykes for a new author .. you couldn't tell. this story begins with two kids.. Madison and Jake.. they meet at age 6 - they become BFF's immediately. Yes, they have other friends of same sex, but the connection of these two, are truly the best! Jake's older brother, Chris and both parents see how close these two friends are... Madison in her years is a tom boy at young age and late bloomer as she ages (always has morals, and always pretty...) their friendship continues into their teens - when Jake kissed Maddison, just because he was wanted to know what it was like.... Madison said shouldn't do that again... lhe agreed!
as time goes on, Jake becomes quite handsome and fills out nicely - girls notice him, and he is love em' and leave em' kind of guy... Madison keeps her feelings to herself until one event w/her girlfriend and Jake sets her off.. from that point on, Jake is AWFUL to Madion.... calls her names (this goes on for several years, and breaks madison heart) but what is done is done... until another very tragic event changes everything in Jake and Madison's world....
I will stop there... this book is emotional, has times where each character is an over re-acter.. but, it also makes the book! the only reason for a 4 star and not 5.... i felt the fight between jake and madison, was a legitament one ; however , I feel it lasted too long and I found myself growing tired of their stupid fights... get over it already and just talk! ya know?? but that is all...
it was a GREAT book, a lot goes on in this book... HEAVY STUFF to deal with as a teenager... heck even an adult...
so great job Nicole Dykes on a book well done. I would like to see if you might have a book follow up of any other characters in the book maybe, Ryan or Andy ? just to name a few....

A Decent Start for a New Author
By Christina @ Books and Prejudice
I saw on goodreads that Nicole had just published her first book and that it was free on kindle for two days. So I went ahead and downloaded it. I usually let my ebooks sit for a long time (I'm a big fan of having a book in hand). But not two days after I downloaded it did I forget to bring a book to work with me. This was the first thing in my kindle library on my phone.

There are some technical issues with the writing in this book. Since it was self-published, Nicole of course did not have access to editors. So there is some proof-reading that could be done here. But that's okay. Most people aren't as crazy about things like that as I am (I keep a pen by my bedside to correct books. You'd be amazed at the errors in Divergent).

The story follows the life of Maddy Wright. She is the most sensible of her group of friends and for a long time thinks that they are too young to be sexually active. She and Jake Keller have been best friends since they were six years old. But Jake's life has not been easy on him. And he definitely makes a lot of mistakes. One of those mistakes costs him his friendship with Maddy.

As time goes on, Maddy grows into herself. She is not such a "prude" as people call her. Eventually, she and Jake make up. They get together, but things don't last. Between college, new jobs and new relationships, it's difficult to stay in touch. But rest assured. things work out nicely.

This is a really sweet story about young love. It was a super quick read, and I enjoyed it a lot. There was some sex, but not a grotesque amount. If you are not comfortable reading about sex, then I would not suggest this book. But it is not anywhere close to the Fifty Shades of Grey level.

The one thing that really bothered me was Jake's brother Chris. How did he die? I suppose that might be explored in the next book.

So what did I think? This book was short and sweet, so to say. It had a decent plot-line and Maddy was kind of adorable. I really liked the story. I would recommend it to anyone who can deal with a little sex and likes contemporary romance. I will definitely be reading the second book.
