Emote, by Vikas Gopal Jhingran

Many people fear public speaking more than death. Most wish they could do it better, or at least avoid the sweating, stuttering jitters that plague them before any presentation or speech.

Vikas Jhingran has been there. He was so poor at speaking in public that his supervisor wouldn’t let him make presentations to clients—even when he had done all the work.

Surprisingly, few professional speakers and presenters understand speeches or presentations at a fundamental level. Their overly prescriptive approach actually ends up confusing the speech and the tools that are used to deliver it, instead of connecting with the essential part of speaking—that which engages listeners with the message and the emotions that go with it.

By focusing on the most important aspect of communication—the transfer of emotion—Emote:

  • Develops an emotion-driven approach that will help you deliver a powerful, effective message despite any perceived handicaps.
  • Encourages introverts and non-native speakers to find their voices and deliver impactful speeches.
  • Clarifies the roles of common speaking tools and shows how to use them effectively.

In Emote, Vikas presents an emotion-based approach that will change the way you think about verbal communications. Emote will help you gain the confidence you need to stand in the spotlight and “wow” clients or executives, create connections, and get your message across to anyone.

    About the Author
Vikas Gopal Jhingran is an MIT-trained engineer and researcher who used to suffer from poor speaking skills, due in large part to being both an introvert and an immigrant. He studied public speaking to improve in this area and eventually won the Toastmasters 2007 World Championship of Public Speaking, the first East Indian and only the second Asian to do so in the 80-year history of the competition.

Vikas is an engineer with Shell Oil Company and uses his leadership and communication skills to manage multi-million-dollar projects. He also delivers keynotes and conducts workshops to help others become better speakers. He lives with his wife and two sons in Houston, Texas.

Essential reading for any serious student of either leadership or public speaking.
    By Rashid N Kapadia
Being familiar with the name, some speeches, & fame of the author, coupled with the fact that, most unusually, he is a PHD in engineering from MIT who won the (Toastmasters International) World Championship of Public speaking, while still a doctoral student, was reason enough for me to decide to purchase this book the moment I heard he was planning to write it.

Am I glad I did! Truthfully, regarding the content and ideas, I was anticipating some combination of “more sameness” and “better sameness”. By the time I finished reading the book, (a rushed and less than thorough reading: I could hardly put it down) I knew that I would have to reread it, slowly, at least 2 more times to extract more value.

These were some words the came to mind as I progressed, hurriedly, through the book, specially the latter part: new knowledge, trail blazer, paradigm shift & even seminal work.

The author has, with methodical & intelligent mind, with eclectic research, with serious purpose and intent, analyzed both the root cause of his own success as a speaker, and the true role of emotion in public speaking & in speech writing. This is the work of a very skilled practitioner and analyst who comfortably bridges two worlds that do not frequently intersect—engineering & public speaking/communication: and put together a work that is both unique and valuable.

I liked the engineering mindset & rigor that permeates the book: I liked the fact that this is really a scholarly work made simple and enjoyable.

I suspect that the public speaking profession/community, in time, will come to increasingly endorse & embrace the author’s approach to speech writing, and will in the process become more Emotionally Intelligent speakers and leaders themselves.

From the book QUOTE Daniel Goleman indicates that there are certain components of emotional intelligence (EI) that facilitate effective communication. Could it be that building effective communication skills using an emotion-based approach can help build some components of emotional intelligence? I venture to guess that many will agree with this statement except that, until now, a comprehensive emotion-based method to verbal communication has not been proposed. I hope that this book fills that gap. UNQUOTE. I agree with this statement.

Highly recommended for any serious student of either leadership or public speaking.

I won Speech contests because of Emote
    By MT.
In 15 short chapters, Vikas (the 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking) made a convincing argument of how to write and deliver a memorable speech that will connect with your audience.

What is a speech? This book answers it in a way that will completely change the way you look at speeches. It did that for me. As Emote made me realize, a speech is an emotional dance between the speaker and the audience: it is giving and receiving; pushing and pulling; action and re-action. What you barter with your audience is not words or ideas but emotions. This is a feeling universe. And the best speakers are those that make you feel what they are they feeling. Emote will help you achieve this realm of eloquence that only the finest of humans reach.

You owe it to yourself to be the best speaker you can be. And at a fundamental level, speaking is not about words, or gestures, or body language or the myriads of tools being sold today. At its base, speaking is about transferring emotions. This book will make you understand that and then show you how to start crafting and delivering your speech.

I came across this book at a time when I was preparing for the Toastmasters’ International speaking contest. And right now, I have won the Club, Area, Division and District level. I am now going to Kaula Lumpur to compete with the best public speakers in the world in August 2014 and all that thanks to the wisdom I got and applied from Emote. [I will update this review with my results later this year]
The last chapter – Putting it All Together – shows you how each of the themes explored comes together to form a unified whole. The author was generous enough to put his award winning speeches as the Epilogue. You can see these novel practices on vivid display. This book is worth your time. Study it. Thank me later.

Two points of improvements for this book. One, it is only available in Paperback. I love Hardcover books. This is a book I will be re-reading several times and consulting as I progress on my speaking journey and reading it in a Hardcover format would have been nice. Two, the author stated in the preface that “immigrants and introverts” would enjoy his book. He belongs to both categories himself. But he only devoted one page to immigrants with accents (Page 118). Now, if you get to read this page, you will soon find it is worth the price of the book alone. It was easily my best page from this groundbreaking book. I would just have loved to see a few more pages written on it. I am an immigrant with a thick accent who loves public speaking so that’s why I quickly spotted this.

Overall, this is the best book I have read on communications and public speaking and this is why I will give it five stars. It more than earned my five stars.

    A Break-through Communication Concept
    By Brian Woolf
In 2007, a previously “unknown” Indian MIT doctoral student stole our minds and hearts, and the World Champion Speaker trophy, at the Toastmasters International Speech Contest. Afterwards, still captivated, I wondered what made the speech magical to me? Now, having read Emote, I know.
Vikas Jhingran is the originator of the Emote concept in Public Speaking. It’s the biggest breakthrough in several decades and changes how we will now design and craft our speeches. It is a truly signal accomplishment!
This book clearly explains the concept and why it works. The two final chapters “Putting It All Together” (a step-by-step process of preparing an Emote speech) and “The Three Speeches” (three before/after brilliant championship-winning speeches by Vikas) demonstrate the concept in action. These two chapters alone justify buying this book.
One of its hallmarks is its logical flow of thought. Yet it is not a book you skim through. You read and digest, for Vikas covers Emote not just from a Public Speaking perspective, but also from a One-To-One and a Corporate environment perspective, where the same concept has similar powerful application.
The book’s back cover headline reads: “Wow Clients, Create Connections, and Get Your Message Across.” But the book’s organization doesn’t do full justice to the headline’s claim. It does show how to do all three, but on an interspersed basis rather than in three separate sections: Public Speaking, One-To-One, and the Corporate Environment. For me, this was a little distracting.
The flow would have been a little smoother, too, if Vikas’ conversational style had been more consistent. After all, “a speech is a dialog”, he tells us. So, too, is such a book. Yet, too frequently, we see a formal, non-emotive, impersonal style (eg, “The speaker should …” appears regularly.) A consistent dialog approach would make the book even more of a How-To or Self-Help Book, enhancing its appeal further.
But I quibble. These are minor distractions to a very important, valuable, break-through book that will change the way speakers prepare and deliver speeches.
I appreciated being introduced to Plutchik’s 8 Basic Soft/Hard Emotions that have real relevance to the book’s thrust; later Vikas shows us how to use these and other emotions to help us Emote. We see them on full display in his “Postcard” speech, one of my all-time favorite speeches.
My bottom line: This is a book that students (of all ages) of the art of communication will appreciate. There is real meat herein to chew on. I am slowly chewing on it! I am really glad I read it!
