HAMLET DEAD is a modern reframing of Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. It was created for two basic reasons. First, many of Shakespeare’s words have simply become meaningless to the average American, some words have changed meanings, and the entire Elizabethan syntax is foreign to most Americans. Highly educated persons have difficulty understanding much of what they hear from a Shakespearean stage. Further, uncut printed versions of the play can take as much as four hours to perform on stage—consequently, all directors routinely cut large segments of the script. Therefore, not only has Hamlet’s language been reframed, but the total word count has been cut by a third.
Second, the American theatre has seen little invention in dramatic form for the stage in many years, with the resultant stagnation in the production of innovative new scripts. So, this play is an experiment both in text clarification and dramatic form. The play starts in the moments after Hamlet’s death, and is based on the concept of a ‘life review’ that persons experiencing near-death experiences have reported. As this life review is in Hamlet’s mind, he views it as he sees fit, which is not always in chronological order.
Since Hamlet is dead, time has disintegrated for him. His mind seizes fragments of his life, rearranges them, searches for their meaning. Time continually folds forwards and backwards onto itself. Scenes explode, implode, penetrate one another, collapse onto each other, in kaleidoscopic patterns of images and action. A word leads to part of an event six months in the future, a line to happenings of the previous night.
Characters appear and fade away, are seen through each other, through another moment in time. Fragments of the ‘past’ and ‘future’ intrude into the ‘present', tying together what in life had at times been hidden or unclear to Hamlet. Although he is just an observer at times, he also is drawn back into and re-experiences the most critical moments of his life.
Bottom line, this is an experiment in clarification and form, intended for performance by American actors on American stages for American audiences, so that they can clearly understand every word spoken and also can have a non-linear stage experience. Ultimately, this script is destined for performance before live audiences.
The script has been in development over a period of forty years, so a considerable amount of thought has been devoted to every word, every sentence, every speech, every scene, as well as the arrangements of words, lines and scenes.
