About the Author
Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., was the wife of MSG activist Jack Samuels. Mother and grandmother, she is an experimental psychologist by training, and educational psychologist by degree. She holds a B.S. degree from Northwestern University where she graduated with distinction and departmental honors. She won her Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she studied with Chester Harris and Julian Stanley, both statisticians. In 1988, in an attempt to better understand the etiology of Jack s life-threatening sensitivity to man-made glutamic acid (MSG), Adrienne undertook an investigation of the literature on MSG toxic reactions in animals and adverse reactions in humans, finding that MSG is a neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor, and that industry studies which claim otherwise are all badly flawed. She has written extensively to the FDA and to various members of the Congress. She has testified before the Advisory Committee on the Food and Drug Administration and submitted testimony to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, Life Sciences Research Office on the Evaluation of the Safety of Amino Acids and Related Products, and on the Analysis of Adverse Reactions to Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) FDA Docket No. 92N-0391; and was a plaintiff in the law suit Truth in Labeling Campaign, et al., Plaintiffs vs. Donna Shalala, et al., Defendants, brought to require that MSG in processed food be identified on product labels. She has authored MSG: A Review of the Literature and Critique of Industry Sponsored Research, MSG and the FDA: Historical Perspective, MSG: Food for Thought but Not for Eating, The Toxicity/Safety of Processed Free Glutamic Acid (MSG): A Study in Suppression of Information; co-authored MSG: The Truth and Consequences; and written a number of shorter letters and papers. She is cofounder and director of the Truth in Labeling Campaign.

A 'must read' for anyone who eats (meaning everyone)

"It Wasn't Alzheimer's, It Was MSG" is a frightening first-person account of the dire health effects that many of the ingredients in a wide range of common processed foods can have on sensitive people -- with no warning label required, due to the FDA's acceptance of the food industry's blatant falsehood that manufactured glutamic acid (MSG) is no different from the kind found(and bound) naturally in certain commodities. From a broader perspective, the account provided by Adrienne Samuels and her late husband Jack of the three-decade-long ordeal that Jack experienced as a result of such complicity between regulators and industry (one that Jack only managed to avoid while traveling abroad, and that led to the Samuels' founding of the organization Truth in Labeling) should serve as a warning of just how little trust we can put in the FDA to protect our health -- and a guide to the many potentially harmful ingredients that consumers should be on the lookout for when grocery shopping (or eating out). Because, while we might not all be as sensitive as Jack, these additives can be taking a cumulative toxic toll on our well-being that may be responsible for all manner of debilitating symptoms and illnesses.

I Wanted to Really Like this Book

After reading a dozen pages or so, I said to my self, "Finally a book I can give five stars to." This book stimulated all of my skeptic, anti-establishment, and unrefined foods neurons. I was overwhelmed by the heroic dedication and tenacity of Adrienne and Jack and how magnificently they persevered, not just for Jack's survival but ultimately for ours. I had already made a mental list of the people I was going to give the book to for Christmas.

When I got to Chapter Seven, I stopped to think about what I had read and realized that the way the book was written was very appealing to somebody who wanted to be a believer. But the story after story after story historical format was difficult to organize in my mind, and the data was vague and veiled. But then I flipped backwards and reviewed what I had read and saw that there was little to no data. What many people might call data were either claims or just partial results and were insufficient to judge the quality or the meaning of the claims. Though there were often references, the book must contain enough data to judge the narrative without requiring me to go to a library to find the data. That's one of the primary things I pay for in the price of a book--for the author to have done this research for me and present meaningful summaries of the data. All the heroism and resolve in the world will not supplant data. There are a some appendices with tables in the back, and that appeals to me. But two of the tables still don't present any data and are confusing at best. One appendix was quite useful--"Appendix 3: Names of common ingredients that contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) or create MSG during processing."

Here is what I like about the book:
1) The writing is clear and professional.
2) They explain the different forms of free glutamic acid very well.
3) They list all the names and alternative names of MSG-containing substances.
4) They clearly explain why you cannot depend on the list of ingredients to find MSG.
5) Their determination over many years was epic.
6) Their distrust of the FDA comes close to matching mine.

Here is what I dislike about the book:
1) They never explain why a person who is not sensitive to MSG should regard it as a toxin.
2) They mention excitotoxins and Dr. Russell Blaylock, but this deserves at least a chapter. It should be the focus of their rationale for writing the book because most people are not overtly sensitive to MSG.
3) There is no index. That makes the book of little value as a reference.
4) There is no glossary of acronyms. The book is full of government agency and professional association acronyms. I finally started my own glossary, which helped a lot.
5) The first two appendices list "safety studies demonstrating negative results." But they do not define what is meant by a "negative result." A scientific test is usually designed to test a null hypothesis, which in this case would mean that there is no relationship between the MSG dose and a harmful result. So a negative result would mean that MSG is safe. But I think there is a danger that many non-scientist readers would not apply such a statistical inference to "negative result" and might think of that as demonstrating a harmful effect of MSG. It's one of those things that should be defined or reworded to make sure your reader understands your technical meaning.

I am very grateful to the authors for making this information available. It just falls short of my publication standards.

Another victim of MSG toxicity

I spent 21 years suffering with migraines, Colitis, joint and muscle pain, Asthma, anxiety, and much more. The main culprit turned out to be MSG and its hidden sources. Thanks to Jack Samuels, the subject in this book, I was able to learn how to avoid this dangerous food additive, and eventually write a book to help others do the same.Battling the MSG Myth Jack's wife Adrienne, has written an honest story of Jack's adversity, one which is effecting millions right now, thanks to an FDA which dances with lobbyists paid to protect the food industry moguls. Jack was a mentor who is missed dearly for the caring man and activist he was. His wife has paid him a fitting tribute while helping to sound the alarm in order to help the very people Jack was dedicated to: a large and growing percentage of the population who react to MSG. Most of us unknowingly eat excessive and harmful amounts of hidden glutamate each day, unaware it is causing the very symptoms doctors now systematically label as Fibromyalgia, Autism, ADD, Migraine headaches, Acid reflux, Asthma, and many puzzling neurological disorders. This book will enlighten the reader to the web of deceit, greed, and power that puts a safe face on this otherwise deadly food additive.
