Welcome to the world of Wall Street!

Yes, yes, yes! This book was done right and it absolutely rocked.

The plot, characters, and themes all meshed very well together. It was refreshing to see this book written with so much confidence, particularly for it being book 1 of the trilogy. Like a boss!

It provides a striking perspective to any ordinary individual who is interested in Wall Street’s social life, money, and power. Impressive and well done.

I almost forgot. I need to get fitted for a few power suits before book 2 hits the marketplace. Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Valentino, or Calvin Klein? I guess I have some time to decide.

Great book! I neglected a lot and stayed up way to late reading this book, it was that good. Lots of drama, just enough erotica. Can't wait for the next in the series & hope we get to revisit Jane and find out if she got more than "a satisfying ending"!

A good and intuitive introduction to the dynamics of collusion, although lacking in mathematical rigor

The authors describe the nature of collusion, where a number of individuals or corporations seek to increase profits by agreeing to cooperate rather than compete. Much of this story is told as a series of vignettes, following the activities of the colluding entities as they secretly work together towards their common goal.

One particularly easy to visualize example constructed by the authors is that of a bidding ring consisting of antique dealers who bid on high-end furniture, such as original Chippendale pieces, at estate sales and auctions. One particularly interesting practice of this bidding ring is that in which only one dealer belonging to the ring places a serious bid at any given time. That is, the members of the ring never bid against one another--which would drive up the price of the item. For show, however, the members do bid against one another at early stages of the bidding, but only when the price under consideration is at a ridiculously low level! Another reason that the members of the ring do not bid against one another is that a series of high ascending bids notifies less well informed auction attendees that the piece under bid is of great value, which provides free information to members outside of the bidding ring--resulting in others bidding higher and driving up the price! As the dream of the members of the ring is to buy valuable pieces at prices characteristic of neighborhood garage sales, constraining the bidding process is necessary in order to insure large profits.

The discussion of bidding rings also provides a good introduction to the concept of the "square off" where the members of the bidding ring divide the pieces purchased among themselves after the auction--a process that often consists of a mini-auction that is conducted among the ring members. In corporate collusion there is also a square off process, though in this case it deals with the problem where one member of a cartel sells more units than has been agreed upon at the outset. Essentially, the member who has exceeded his sales quota must pay a penalty to the other members of the cartel, or buy units from the other members at a specified price.

The authors also address the problem faced by cartels and bidding rings in avoiding government scrutiny, as such collusion activity is illegal. The members are seen to hammer out their agreements at trade association meetings, the minutes of which are recorded only by an employee (often a lawyer) of the trade association itself--while the cartel members themselves do their best to divorce themselves from the formal proceedings. It is also interesting that the square off often takes the form of the members of the cartel suing one another--a form of monetary transfer that is more opaque than more direct transactions. Collusive activities may also avoid government scrutiny by taking the form of constraining product quality rather than constraining price. In the early 1990's incandescent light manufacturers put this strategy into effect by capping the operating lifetime of each light bulb!

The one place where this book falls short is in the mathematical description of competition. The authors devote a few tables and footnotes to a mathematical description of price competition, so that the derivation of the relevant equations remains almost completely opaque (pp.93-98), even for the simple linear model considered by the authors. The authors briefly reference about a dozen papers on this topic, with that of Singh and Vives, 1984 (which can be found online as a pdf file) given more attention than the others. To get some flavor for this class of models, the Wikipedia article on the Cournot pricing model is worth reading, especially as an example of Nash equilibrium. The model described by Singh and Vives, and that of Cournot, however, only involve two competing entities (i.e the duoloply case). I have yet to find a paper that treats an arbitrary number of competing entities to my satisfaction. The case with an arbitrarily large number of players competing for a slice of a given market is central to the collusion process, as the greater the number of players, the more difficult it is maintain the high prices that are the objective of the colluding entities.

Have not seen anything as thorough on the topic of monopolies and lesser collusions. Worth reading for the lay person and all involved in the topic including company CEOs. Marshall and Marx have done a real service. It is a technical book but includes much that the lay person can understand. Unfortunately, you can't wait for the movie!

“Fine.” She set the tray down on the bar and let it clatter. “My other order better be ready when I get back.”
She snatched the bottle by the neck and charged through the crowd to deliver it. At least he hadn’t backslid, but what would people think about a man who sang about whiskey drinking a carbonated beverage? She slipped and slid between the people circling him and held out the pop silently when she reached him. Damn, he looked even better than he sounded, sweat dampening his hair around the edges of his cowboy hat, glistening at the opening of his western-cut shirt. Her tongue curled against the desire to lick his skin. He stopped mid-strum to take the drink from her. She watched like an idiot as he tilted his head back and drank, watched the muscles of his throat work. He set the bottle down and picked up the song exactly

Another wonderful Bluestone story

Another wonderful Bluestone story! I fell in love with the series after reading Leo and Trinity's story. And this one didn't disappoint either. Beth was a strong, independent female character who was conflicted with what her heart and brain wanted. Maddox, the sweetheart, tried to win her heart and build their relationship. It was sweet, tender, and intense in all the right places. Linda and the Bluestone crew were great supporting characters and made me believe the atmosphere of the town. I'm looking forward to reading the next one about Quinn and Lily!

I fell in love with Maddox and Beth's story! After 14 years, these two high school sweethearts are reunited igniting a love that never died but was just denied! You'll see their struggle to reconcile their past to their present admidst a town full of supporting citizens! I loved every minute of this amazing heart-warming romance! I purchased this book in the 3 book boxed set "For Love Of Bluestone." I highly recommend this book, this series and this author!!

Beth Lapointe spent her childhood avoiding abuse when she could and defending her brothers and sister when she couldn't. Like Bluestone Homecoming, Ms. Fredrick weaves a tale full of emotion and understanding of small towns and the people who inhabit them. You'll worry about Beth, root for her--and you'll flat out love Maddox. Love scenes are hot, but I also liked the tenderness leading up to them.
You don't have to be a country music fan to love this book, but I am--and she knows the field well enough to throw in the right details to make this book one you'll cherish.

I finished Bluestone Song in one sitting, and haven't started another book yet, because like Beth because I don't want to let Maddox go yet!

The errors eventually resulted in the apparent disorder of the western 'ABC'. By tracking these 'copied' errors across a number of ancient alphabets, the author was not only able to reconstruct the copying process, but he also arrived at a date before which it must have taken place.

An insightful book

Wim Borsboom has hit upon a brilliant idea related to the origins of the western alphabet. He shows how in its earliest and original form the western alphabet sequence of characters (abecedary) was modelled after an ancient scientifically organized Sanskrit alphabet (abugida).
The Sanskrit alphabet from its very early beginnings used a column and row format, and in his research he shows how that format was initially adopted by Near-Eastern (probably from the Levant) "budding linguists" (as the writer puts it).
Using as evidence a ca. 3400 year old cuneiform clay tablet from what is now Syria, he demonstrates how the original Indian tabular format became read row-by-row rather than column-by-column, which mistaken order eventually resulted in its now so familiar linear alphabetic sequence.
Using clear and helpful color coding, he demonstrates how that western linear sequence (clearly shown right on the front cover of the book) still shows its early origins - what looks like a haphazard sequence of letters still shows its ancient linguistic scientific roots.
This research is of importance not only to the student of alphabets and languages, but also to the historian and the layperson interested in understanding cultural interactions in the ancient world and how those interactions still reverberate in the modern world.

Although, at first sight "Alphabet or Abracadabra?" seems not an easy read, when one first reads the front outside and inside cover pages, and then its outside and inside back pages, and when one then proceeds page by page from the introduction to the end without skipping (except for the notes at the end of each chapter) then story of this discovery slowly unfolds and its impact eventually registers strongly.
Another way to enjoy this book is to first peruse the many illustrations but... leave the tables and charts for later serious reading.

At the end of the Indian print version of the book is a delightful little story in which the writer reminisces about when (first grade,1960) and how (pandemonium) his research began with a puzzling question to the teacher, "Miss, why are those letters in that order?" to which she answered, "Well, they are alphabetic of course!"
Little did she (yes, the proverbial matron) know that when she called for "Order!" (see front cover blackboard) that one of the more precocious kids would find that order and write about it!

Facinating research

In the context of Indology, linguistics has justifiably attained a bad name as it has been explored, exploited and misused by too many Indologists. Many of their works have provided illustrations of ‘agenda driven' research.

Unfortunately though, much good that can come out of linguistics is also thrown away like the proverbial "baby with the bathwater"!

However, there are few brilliant gems. and this book, "Alphabet or Abracadabra? - Reverse Engineering the Western Alphabet" by Shri Wim Borsboom is one of them.

It may not be a light reading, but definitely worth the effort for a curious, tenacious and inquisitive reader."

Very tasty indeed!

This is an absolutely great little novella from the lovely Rebecca Black ....and her first!

Cooking has always been a huge part of Ellies life and something she finds great comfort in, so when she was given the opportunity of working as a chef at E'Toile, she jumped at the chance. Nate and Jack were her best friends and her bosses - and both as hot as hell, so she tried hard to ignore the constant lucid thoughts running through her head. Besides, she had been celibate for the whole year she'd worked there and she could handle it ....or so she thought! Many a day she'd spend lusting after her bosses, watching how they moved and imagining the fun she could have with both of them. Little did she realise that both Jack and Nate were fighting similar feelings, only now they felt it was time to act on them. They approach Ellie and offer her a proposition, one which would hopefully satisfy all three of their needs, but would Ellie go for it?

I have to say that this only took me a few hours to read as I was gripped almost from the off. Rebecca has a great writing style and expertly draws the reader in. Although this is only a short novella, the characters are cleverly brought to life and you're given real understanding of their situation. I found myself really warming to Ellie and it was great having a little background knowledge to better understand her feelings. The sex scenes are sensual yet dirty which I absolutely loved. Rebecca, I applaud you on making me gasp ...it's not an easy thing to do but hey, you managed it!
Overall a great read and one that will make you squirm on the edge of your seat! I look forward to reading more from Rebecca Black with great anticipation.

The Heat is on...!

Having read Rebecca's short stories online I was excited to learn that she was writing a novella.

Ellie works with Nate & Jack in the restaurant business - their working relationship is perfect. The trouble is that after working side by side for over a year Ellie has a case of the hots for Jack and Nate. What can be worse that lusting after one guy? Yep, you guessed it, lusting after his best mate too! Ellie does not want to ruin their friendship so when Nate & Jack make a proposal both professionally and personally she freaks.

Will she take the guys up on their offer? Will it affect her working relationship with them?

Rebecca has a great writing style and given I read a lot in the erotic romance genre she was able to make me blush (no mean feat I must add!!)

I was very honoured to be asked to beta read for her and whole heartedly recommend Rebecca Black to all and sundry. A great new talent and defiantly one to watch.

Naughty but very nice novella.

A spectacular, sexy debut from an author that is now on my 'read anything they write' list!
This novella had me enthralled from the very first page. Ellie is a strong, fiercely independent lady who I instantly warmed to. She works alongside two very hot, successful men who run their own restaurants. Ellie has been lusting over them both for a while but doesn't want to jeopardise her career. Nate and Jack have their own ideas and finally decide that it's time Ellie has a taste of them and vice versa.
The tension between the three is written cleverly and the build up is exquisite torture. The sex is red hot and if, like me, you're a fan of m�nage, you'll be in heaven. When I read at the end, to be continued, I actually bounced with joy!

Not ordered well.

Says "covering every period and development.." but doesn't give consistant examples. Say, you're looking for a Baroque chair, you might find some Baroque furniture under the article Baroque, and some chairs under the article Chair, but you might not find any baroque chairs. When I got this book, I thought I could use it to do some period research but it was very difficult to find what I wanted, if at all, and it wasn't what I was hoping for and expecting unfortunately.

I'm hoping he enjoy TEOF.

It was a gift for my grandson for Christmas.. I thumbed thru and it looked really interesting to me. I haven't seen Kevin since Christmas; but, I'll be in touch with him to ask what he thinks of it. He likes to hang out in Raymour & Flannigan, so, I'm hoping he enjoy TEOF.

Good but dated content deserves a new revision

This book is just what I was looking for: Illustrated descriptions of styles and terms used for furniture. If you want to know what terms like "cabriole" mean (for which you really need illustrations), this is probably the right book for you. I say "probably" because The Encyclopedia of Furniture was originally published in 1938 and the current edition was revised almost 50 years ago. Given that most of the material is historical, that's not as bad as it sounds

The Encyclopedia of Furniture would benefit greatly from the better editorial and production values that computerized compilation methods have made possible. (Unfortunately, most publishers--reflecting the ownership of many by huge multinational media corporations--are more interested in how fast they can publish than whether the material is comprehensive or even factually correct.)

Following are examples of the kinds of problems that could be eliminated with some editorial direction and modern production techniques (which will also give you an idea of what's covered by The Encyclopedia of Furniture):

--The criteria for deciding what or who deserves an entry aren't clear. For example, an entry appears for William Morris but none for Breuer or Thonet. And does James Gillingham (an 18th century Phila. furniture maker whose name isn't identified with a chair or any other piece of furniture) warrant more space than either of these?
--It appears that only photographic plates are numbered, but line drawings don't always appear adjacent to the text they illustrate. Because there are 1800+ illustrations, this can create confusion. For example, to what do the unlabeled line drawings numbered a-e at the top of col. 1, p. 389 refer (none of the text appearing on pages 388-389 appears to reference these).
--The illustrations don't always appear with the most appropriate entry. For example, there's no illustration for KNEEHOLE but illustrations of kneehole desks appear under both DESK and ENGLAND.
--The means of illustration are also sometimes inappropriate. PERIOD FURNITURE (p. 336) is illustrated by a hand-drawn timeline whereas it should have been typeset---or perhaps the timeline (which certainly deserves space in this encyclopedia) belongs someplace else.
--In some places (e.g., the heavily illustrated ENGLAND section) the illustrations sometimes don't even fit the printed page (they just kind of slide off the end).
--INTAGLIO (p. 262) references illustration 32, which is a Queen Anne armchair. Does this mean that the three-toed DRAKE FOOT of the chair leg is an example of intaglio? The entry is vague, and so is the illustration.
--Running heads and folios are essential but are sometimes missing just where they are needed most (e.g., the lengthy ENGLAND section).

This great reference is most deserving of an extensive, up-to-date revision.
