Poorly written and organized

Very poorly written textbook. It reads like a 650 page APA-formatted paper. It's repetitive, not just from chapter to chapter, but from paragraph to paragraph. I literally have had the feeling of deja vu several times while reading different chapters. It cites authors with no explanation for them as in who they are or what they do or why we care about what they have to say . There is very little emphasis on important theories or applications. Mentions of what "this author" has done shouldn't even be included. The fact that you used a theory in your work means nothing to me. Who are you?I can't believe this is the sixth edition of this muck.

The content of the book is easily read and understood

Very poorly formatted e-book. The tables and charts are quite distorted and difficult to interpret. The content of the book is easily read and understood, and as far as a nursing textbook goes this is a leisurely read. I would recommend renting a paperback copy because the e-book is difficult to navigate, and so many of the figures are poorly formatted. Not worth the convenience of an e-book.

Poorly formatted e-book.

Be sure to download the preview before committing to this book. I found the Kindle format to be poorly done. It is not the same layout as the textbook. Instead of columns of text, you get a single full page view with the text expanded to fill a frame like you might expect if you were reading a novel. I usually buy kindle versions of my textbooks, but this one missed the mark. You're better off with the Pageburst Kno version, especially if you're using a tablet and want the book to look exactly as laid out in the textbook.

But it wasn't until 1925 that the government began executing its plan for national highway construction. In summer 1926, Route 66 was born, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles and marking the country's first major east-west thoroughfare. By 1930, Route 66 was in important route for both truckers and travellers alike, and by 1939 it became known as 'The Mother Road' thanks to John Steinbeck's classic 'The Grapes of Wrath'. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Americans travelled this great road - from those heading west during the Great Migration to escape to Dust Bowl and the Depression, to postwar families taking road trips across the country. By the 1970s, however, four-lane highways, expressways, and tollways had taken over, and Route 66 fell into disrepair. In this book, Route 66 authority David Knudson traces the fascinating story of The Mother Road, in a colorful guide that examines the origins and demise of the road, the roadside attractions and cottage industries it spawned, and the efforts to save and restore it.

About the Author
David Knudson is founder and executive director of The National Historical Route 66 Federation (www.nationalroute66.org), which works to preserve and promote the road. Knudson founded the Federation in 1994 after completing a trip across the country, during which he was unable to locate old section of Route 66. The National Histoic Route 66 Federation is a worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to directing the public's attention to the importance of US Highway Route 66 in America's cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize he economies of communities along the entire 2400-mile stretch of road. Knudson and the Federation were instrumental in getting Congress to pass the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Act in 1999. Formerly a partner with the Los Angeles-based advertising firm of Walker, Knudson and Campbell, Knudson also serves on the advisory council of the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

I liked the book very much

Having grown up near Route 66 in Southwest Missouri, I have many fond memories traveling it. As it was the route we took every Saturday into "town" for shopping or that night to the movies, it was an important road. The most vivid memory was our families first and only vacation trip in the 1950s through the entire western half of the U.S. in our new 1953 Chevrolet. Reading this book brought back a lot of memories, plus new information that I did not know when I was a teenager, and how important the highway was to America. I have driven tens of thousand miles on it in my lifetime and some of it still exists near our family farm. I liked the book very much, and if one lets their mind go back to days gone by, it will bring warm memories I am sure.

Easy to read overview of Route 66, providing history, the roads demise, and recovery as a tourist attraction. Definitely makes me want to take time to explore this historic highway! Has interesting pictures, but would benefit from having more maps.

About the Author
Rudolfo Anaya is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. He was one of the first winners of the Premio Quinto Sol National Chicano literary award. Winner of the PEN Center USA West Award for Fiction for his novel Alburquerque , he is best-loved for his classic bestseller Bless Me, Ultima . His other works include Zia Summer, Rio Grande Fall, Jalamanta, Tortuga, Heart of Aztlan , and The Anaya Reader . He has also written numerous short stories, essays, and children's books, including The Farolitos of Christmas and Maya's Children .

Book review for "Bless me Ultima"

"Bless me Ultima" is a wonderful story based on the "Chicano" or Northern New Mexico native people culture, religion, and customs that tells us about the relationship between a six year old boy called Antonio and an Old wise Lady called Ultima who is a "curandera" or healer, and how Anotonio faces a lot of difficulties and has to deal with curses, healings, dead people and mean friends and becomes a man of learning throughout his chilhood with Ultima's help.
Since the author is from Northern New Mexico and the book takes place in two real small villages called Las Pasturas and Puerto de Lunas wich are located North of New Mexico i think Rodulfo Anaya put a little bit of his life experience into the story to remark the origins of a culture that tends to dissapear as new Chicano generations come to this world which makes the book more exciting and more valuable.
I really enjoyed reading this book because i could follow the story very well considering that english is my second languaje and that i'm still having some problems with grammar and sentence structures and because i like reading mythical stories and i'm very familiar with them. Another aspect of this book that i liked and i found familiar was that New Mexican culture and Colombian and Latin Americna culture in general have a lot of things in common such as believing in ghosts, witches, curses, spirits, etc; and that the religion is the same and that there are not really too many differences within it.

A Hispanic boy�s coming-of-age story

Set in NM on the border between a small village and the huge llano (plains), Bless Me, Ultima is Rudolfo Anaya's much acclaimed and award-winning coming-of-age novel from the Hispanic perspective. Antonio is torn betw his father's cowboy side of the family who ride on the llano and his mother's village and farming relations. Many conflicts are presented here: Hispanic vs American culture, Catholicism vs paganism, parents' expectations vs the child's desires, Spanish blood vs native blood.
Antonio's life is forever altered when his aunt Ultima, a curandera (healer) comes to live with the family; she teaches Antonio many things, most importantly how to gather the self-knowledge that will help carry him into adulthood.

A poignant coming-of-age story....

I have just finished reading Bless Me, Ultima in my English class and I can say that it is a good choice.
The book is about a young Mexican boy, Antonio Marez, growing up in New Mexico during the mid 1940s. It begins when he is six years old, and Ultima, a curandera or healing woman, comes to live with his family because she is getting too old to live by herself. Through Ultima's gentle guidance and support, Antonio faces his uncertainties and learns to go on with life.
Antonio's parents are opposites, his father being a Marez, people of the llano (the desert land in New Mexico), and his mother being a Luna, farmers and people of the moon and the earth. His father wants Antonio to grow up free to roam the land and become a vaquero, as he once was. His mother wants Antonio to be a priest, a man of learning. Antonio is torn between them regarding his future.
Throughout the story, Antonio also faces confusion over religion and spirituality. Ultima believes in God, but she also believes and works magic. But there is no evil in Ultima and Antonio is confused over Catholicism. His mother wants him to become a priest, and though he does believe in God, he wants understanding from Him, answers to his many questions.
From a very young age, Antonio witnesses death. Death of a war-crazed man, Lupito. Death of a good family friend, Narcisco. And finally the unjust death of Ultima, killed by an evil man vowing revenge on Ultima for the death of his two daughters who were brujas (witches).
Through the trials he is faced with and the death of his beloved mentor, Ultima, Antonio learns to go on with life and leave the past behind. He realizes the power of good over evil and understands that truth is more powerful than that which is prescribed by custom.
A lot of what goes through Antonio's mind through the story is similar to the questions I have had through growing up. I can relate to him and to the other characters in the book. And I have learned that mankind is no different in spite of age, race, religion, culture, and upbringing.
Kudos to Rudolfo Anaya for his first novel that brings Mexican-American culture to the reader and a genuinely poignant "growing up" story that can be read by all ages.

Sharon J. Gerson and Steven M. Gerson are dedicated career professionals who have a combined total of over 80 years teaching experience at the college and university level. Helpful and very relevant for both the class and workplace

I ordered this book for a Professional Research and Reporting course and it has been extremely helpful. In my class, we are required to compose memos, professional e-mails, letters, reports, and more. Every time I was confused or was not sure about an assignment, this book has been here to offer guidance and clarification when my instructor lacked in both. Highly recommended. It's not just another textbook you would buy and use 2 or 3 times then store on your bookshelf to collect dust. You will want to keep and use this book as a quick reference long after graduation and after you've been hired at a job.

Good book, bad delivery

I had to get this book for my classes at school. I thought that the book was a good deal, but I would certainly not order from this seller again. The book took almost a month to show up, and my grades suffered because it took so long to get my book. I didn't even get a shipping number to see where my book was coming from or where it was.

I would be more amiable to the book if it hadn't dropped my grade a letter. Definitely not pleased.

You will not believe the information and tips and tricks Jack gives in his books. MYSTERY OF MAKING IT is the most crammed with ingormation. If I could buy only one that is the one I would choose. But, I bought all of the 6 others when I started reading Mystery,because I didn't want to miss anything Jack had to say. I will eventually get to ordering his Texas History books, but right now I need the information in the art series to sink in to being automatic pilot for me.
Do not hesitate to purchade any of his book !!! All are worth more than you are payihhng!!!
He is mostwilling to share of anyone I have ever known.
