Got me around Eastern Europe for a month
By sarah2012
This book worked great for those situations where I was in the country side and jut needed to get across a few words though.

Important Note: Eastern Estonian is different from what is spoken in Tallinn and is closer to Russian. The locals can get a bit pissed if you speak traditional Estonian (which is all that's covered in this book) to them in Narva.

The Psychology of Conflict and Combat:, by Ben Shalit

Shalit draws on the research he conducted as field psychologist in the Israeli military to offer an original behavioral model of combat that accounts for the fighting potential of an individual or group. His model is based on the appraisal process that the individual undertakes in combat conditions to assess a situation, whether it concerns him or not and regardless of his role. It is through this process that the individual makes a judgment, taking into consideration his past experience, knowledge, and expectations, that in turn leads to a course of action. Shalit pinpoints and describes specific aspects of the psychology of combat and conflict including the motivation to act in combat with special reference to the aggression drive; the definition of an enemy and the effects such appraisals have on behavior; the situational factors in heroic acts; and discipline and its affects on combat efficiency.

Review
"The author, a battle-experienced psychologist, presents a highly theoretical analysis of such conflict/combat concepts as aggression, courage, and discipline. Chapters deal with the important concept of aggression and assessing soldier coping and combat potential; one chapter is titled 'Lebanon - The Face of Battle.' Although the volume begins with a riveting personal description of the author's battle experience. Shalit's engrossing writing style is quickly replaced by a pedantic dissertation mode of writing. It is a solid academic work, yet few social science students will be greatly informed about the psychology of conflict and combat when the author resorts to symbols and equations for explanation. Contains an excellent bibliography."-Choice

Not for the layman
By Nate Wright
[...]

Shalit's work is written specifically for psychology and military professionals. His detailed categorization and impulse to construct word formulas can be tough to wade through. It is also quite old, published in 1988.

From the title, I was hoping for a more comprehensive look at psychological issues within and surrounding conflict and combat. Instead, it was focused heavily on detailing and categorizing the types of aggression, while analyzing their value in producing effective soldiers and units.

Shalit does take an interesting look at the process of coping and provides some interesting statistics on Israeli soldiers' differing attitudes towards Syria/Egypt/Jordan - including former POWs' attitudes of each army. But in the end, none of this is really enough to make the book worthwhile.

Memoirs of War, 1914-15, by Marc Bloch

Great historians have seldom described the notable events in which they themselves participated. Marc Bloch - author of Feudal Society, the classic study of medieval social systems and co-founder of the influential French historical journal Annales - is an exception, In his powerful memoir The Strange Defeat, he analysed the fall of France in 1940 from the viewpoint of combatant as well as historian. And in his Memoirs of War, 1914-15, here in its first English translation (originally published in hard covers in 1980 by Cornell University Press), Bloch left a keen and affecting account of his earliest experience of war. Carole Fink's introduction includes a brief biography of Bloch, discusses the effect of the war upon his intellectual development, and assesses his achievements as a historian. Though Bloch survived the savage trench warfare of the First World War, he was shot by a Gestapo firing squad in 1944 for his participation in the Resistance. Trenchant, inspiring, and tersely written, Memoirs of War, 1914-15 is a monument to a great scholar and fierce patriot.

Amazing and dissappointing.
By Amazon Customer
This really is a great easy short read. I highly recommend it if you are interested in a primary first hand account of being in the trenches of WWI. The author was a quite a hero in WWII. I will say it's amazingly disappointing as it ends terribly abruptly when he becomes ill so I didn't get as much as I wanted but that doesn't take away from whats there. There is no post war commentary or anything from that author as this was published long after he was killed by the Gestapo.

This is a highly readable translation (although not the only one) of a work of literature that has several familiar names. In full, it is "Brennu-Njals Saga," or "The Story of Burned Njal," but just plain "Njals-Saga" is equally correct. And, like several other sagas, it has a nickname in its native Iceland, "Njala" (like "Grettla," for "Grettir's Saga"). It is generally conceded to be the outstanding monument of a burst of literary productivity at the very edge of medieval European civilization. For those who know it, with its unforgettable portraits of men and women presented through their responses to the events that entangle them, it has a place alongside the great novels of modern Europe. It demands patience of the reader; although it starts off with a couple of resounding scandals, including a Queen-Mother's affair with a handsome Icelander, before plunging into disputes over property, and who stole the hay, and wise advice that is never followed. (There are certain resemblances to Westerns; including the problem of subsistence in an unforgiving environment, and the critical importance of a reputation.)

Magnus Magnussson and Hermann Palsson made the decision to give a plain-language version, which I think has stood up well for over forty years (first published 1960). On my first reading I found the Introduction, Genealogical Tables, Glossary of Proper Names, Note on Chronology, and maps, all very useful. It has been supplanted in the Penguin Classics list by a new translation by Robert Cook, but I hope that this older version will continue to remain available. (Penguin sometimes has two, or even three, translations of a given work in circulation.)

"Njal's Saga" is, like several others, a long account of cascading disputes between farmers, and the resulting fights and lawsuits, broken up with voyages and adventures in Viking-Age Europe. (There are a great many shorter ones on the same basic pattern, generally less complex and diverse.) "Njala" includes a famous account of the official conversion of Iceland to Christianity, and a description of the Battle of Clontarf in Ireland, just over a decade later -- both apparently drawn from pre-existing accounts, and both inserted into the sequence of events quite naturally, although possibly with some violence to chronology.

The co-translators' most dramatic departure from the Icelandic text was the decision to relegate most genealogical descriptions of characters to footnotes. Many chapters begin something like "There was a man named A who lived at B. He was the son of C, son of D, son of E, who was the first who came to B, and he was the son of F, son of G, the kinsman of ..." Those of us who persist in reading the major sagas will soon learn to decipher such passages to mean either, "A came from a famous family, and would have many allies in a dispute," or "A was a complete nobody, whose most notable ancestors were famed only for being violent and unreasonable." Until then, these paragraph-long descriptions are just a jumble of names -- there is a "Monty Python" routine based on that impression, which is very, very funny if you know the sagas; and, I am told, amusing anyway if you don't.

"Njala" has had a long series of translations from its original Old Icelandic into other languages -- there is a whole book on its "reception" into other literatures, "The Rewriting of Njals Saga: Translation, Ideology, and Icelandic Sagas," by Jon Karl Helgason. And it bulks large in Andrew Wawn's "The Vikings and the Victorians,' because it received a magnificent first translation into English, by George Webbe Dasent, "The Story of Burnt Njal, or, Life in Iceland at the End of the Tenth Century," pubished in 1861. Dasent had begun work in 1843, but the whole subject was still so unfamiliar that Dasent, probably wisely, spent a good part of the two-volume first edition just explaining medieval Iceland to his readers. This material was dumped in later, one-volume editions of Dasent's translation, including the Everyman's Library reprint of 1911, which got a new introduction and select bibliography by E.O.G. Turville-Petre in 1957. It was available in paperback in the 1970s, in competition with the Penguin Classics translation.

Dasent's "Burnt Njal" has many merits, even today. Unfortunately, between Dasent's decision to imitate the Icelandic vocabulary and sentences, and changes in English since the 1850s, many will find his prose indigestible; and the 1772 edition of the saga he was using is now *very* obsolete. For those who want a look, there is an HTML edition on-line; the translator's name is there given as DaSent. Modern readers can turn to Jesse Byock's "Viking Age Iceland" for an equivalent of Dasent's introduction and appendices, with their maps and diagrams; it is much more readable, as well as much more reliable. And I would certainly make the suggestion of Magnusson and Palsson as a better place to start with Njal and his associates.

Another alternative is the American-Scandinavian Foundation's 1955 "Njal's Saga," translated by Carl F. Bayerschmidt and Lee M. Hollander. For American readers it had the slight advantage of not being quite so British in tone as the Penguin translation (let alone the mid-Victorian Dasent!); but it seems to have been available in recent years only in a 1998 paperback from a British publisher, in the "Wordsworth Classics of World Literature" series, with a new introduction by Thorsteinn Gylfason. It too has maps, family trees, and notes.

There is a substantial critical literature on "Njal's Saga," some of it in English. Richard F. Allen's old "Fire and Iron: Critical Approaches to Njals Saga" is very literary in approach. Jesse Byock's "Feud in the Icelandic Saga," which argues that behavior in the sagas reflects real social patterns, has thirty pages on this saga (Chapter 9, "Two Sets of Feud Chains"), which I think are brilliant; but probably most helpful to those who already know the story, and can appreciate how he makes connections between scattered-looking events.

For those who find "Njala" a bit too long to start with, there are variety of other sagas in excellent translations -- and also some not-so-good translations. Going strictly by the sagas themselves, other good places to start would be "Laxdaela Saga," which shares some important characters, scenes and events with "Njala," "Grettir's Saga," the story of a famous outlaw, with some wonderful accounts of battles with supernatural as well as human enemies; and "Egil's Saga" (Egils Saga Skallagrimssonar; "Egla" for short), which is closer to the popular idea of an Icelandic saga. The hero is a warrior-poet, brilliant, bad-tempered, and remarkably ugly; he takes after his grandfather, who was nicknamed "Evening-Wolf," and suspected of being a shape-shifter, and Egil spends much of his time on Viking adventures abroad, instead of tending the flocks ... .

Incidentally, "Njala," "Laxdaela," and "Egla" all contribute, along with the master-narrative of Snorri Sturluson's "Heimskringla" (a long saga-history of the Kings of Norway) to the late Poul Anderson's fine historical novel, "Mother of Kings," which is another approach to the world of the sagas.

[Addendum, September 2015: As noted in my response to one of the comments below, I had forgotten that I had reviewed this translation separately. It turns out that it had been dropped from the Penguin Classics, and replaced by a different translation, which I described in a review of a Kindle version of Dasent's translation, as follows:

"The most recent translation, by Robert Cook, is readily available in paperback and Kindle editions. It was originally published in 1997, as part of a set of "The Complete Sagas of the Icelanders," and was issued separately by Penguin Books in 2002. Cook, like Dasent, aimed at reproducing as much as possible the spare prose style of the Icelandic original, and doing so without the archaic vocabulary and dialect words that Dasent sometimes adopted (usually related to the Icelandic form; a precedent followed by William Morris and E.R. Eddison). Whether Cook succeeded, or just raised a barrier to appreciation of the saga, is a matter of some dispute. Some reviewers have compared it unfavorably to the translation which it (unfortunately) replaced in the Penguin list, by Magnus Magnusson and Hermann Palsson. They made the decision to give a plain-language version, which I think stood up well for over forty years (first published 1960). I have reviewed it at some length (along with a comparison to Dasent), and I must say that I think it is a better entry into the saga literature than either Dasent or Cook. These days one has to find it in a library, or as a used book."

See also the "Comments" below for my advice on how most easily to find the Cook translation on Amazon, as of Sept. 2, 2015.]

My Favorite of the Sagas
By Thorvald
My online nickname, Thorvald, may give you a hint that I'm fond of the Norse Sagas :-) . Of them all, this is my favorite.
The Sagas are adventure stories, historical novels, and family histories all in one. They were written approximately 800 years ago about the Nordic world around the turn of the last millennium. The Magnusson and Paulson translations are quite good, very readable, but don't expect to find anything resembling a modern novel.
The Norse Vikings were quiet farmers, talented poets and artists, politically enlightened people with a democratic government and strong rights for women...then they'd get drunk and head off for a fun-filled summer of rape, pillage, and slave-taking. They were cooly dispassionate about everything, including death for even their gods would die eventually. Though the saga writers were Christians (Iceland converted in the year 1000), they present the pagen Norse religion without editorial comment. They write about it as about everything, in a very unemotional manner.
The unemotional tone is one that the modern reader will find most odd yet, as you read more sagas, may begin to appreciate. The sagas have a clear, bright, unencumbered atmosphere to them. Events are presented, people live, act, and die and it is left to the reader to decide how they must have felt. Consider a modern newscast--the reporter will inevitably ask, "How do you feel about that?" Current style is to try to delve into feelings and emotions rather than facts and events. The sagas are the opposite.
Terrific Viking stories in a fascinating world lost to time.

The Archetypal Saga - Two Thumbs Up!
By Andrew B. Jordan
In addition to what other reviewers have added, let me state that the main plot of this saga is the attempt of the prescient Njal to save his family from the destruction that he forsees in the future by creating political and marriage alliances with other powerful families. In doing so, Njal innevitably draws more and more of Iceland into the web of his own fate, whose strands finally peter out after the Battle of Clontarf in Ireland (c.1014 ?).
Although some detractors criticize the style, the reader must understand that Njal's Saga is written in typical saga style with stock characters and situations. This is NOT a modern-day novel; it is written in an idiomatic style. Conversation and narrative contain the dry wit, excellent understatement and brevity that characterizes saga style. Strict Norse traditions of hospitality (even to enemies)and the strong relationships of foster ties are also peculiar to these types of sagas.
After reading Njal's Saga, one can come away not only with a great story, but also keen insights into Norse culture and tradition. I highly recommend it!

There came to me also a most famous feminine sea called Granny Imallye with three galleys and two hundred fighting men... This was a notorious woman in all the coasts of Ireland -Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Deputy of Ireland, 1576. Fearless leader by land and by sea, political pragmatist and tactician, rebel, pirate and matriarch, the ""most notorious woman in all the coasts of Ireland"" Grace O'Malley challenges and manipulates the turbulent politics of the 16th century a period of immense social change and political upheaval. Breaching boundaries of gender imbalance and bias, she re-wrote the rules to become one of the world's documented feminist trail-blazers. In this, the original international bestselling biography of this historic icon, from rare and exclusive contemporary manuscript material, author Anne Chambers draws Ireland's great pirate queen in from the vagueness of myth and legend and presents the historical reality of one of the world's most extraordinary female leaders. First published in 1979 Granuaile has become an inspiration for documentary and film makers, composers, artists and writers from a range of creative disciplines worldwide. In this 30th anniversary edition, as well as some textual additions, the inclusion of new transcriptions of contemporary 16th-century manuscript material, located and deciphered by the author, will be of special interest to students, teachers and historians as well as to the general reader.

An Amazing Woman!!
By Pegi Eyers
Lets hear it for the O'Malleys!! Those of the Irish clan claiming descendancy from Granuaile (Grace) O'Malley, the notorious and brilliant Gaelic Chieftan and "Pirate Queen" are lucky indeed. "Granuaile" is a fascinating story of an audacious woman ruler at a time in history (1530-1600) when it was unheard of for women to have such ambition, influence and power. A great read for those passionate about Irish history and those amazing Irish women!!!

Informative and the perfect thing to take to Ireland

I expected to learn about Grace O'Malley but more important I learned about the times and tensions as the celtic warrior system became overwhelmed by the English conquest of Ireland.

Granuaile - an inspired biography
By Marilyn Malone
Anne Chambers' latest edition of Granuaile is as accessible as if it were fiction. Chambers relates Grace o'Malley's courage and tenacity in 16th century Ireland in navigating the seas in her galleys as well as the court of Elizabeth I. This is a well documented life thanks to Anne Chambers.

Wonderful Adventure and Love Story
By Anita
Quinn's Undying Rose is the sixth book in the Scanguards Vampire Series. Quinn is a vampire and works for Scanguards. He was married to the love of his life some 200 years ago, but when he returned to her after being turned into a vampire, she rejected him. Little did he know that he had left his wife pregnant with his daughter. Rose, his wife, was turned without his knowledge not long after rejecting him. Due to circumstances beyond her control she felt forced to go on with her life without Quinn. She refuses to turn her daughter and promises to protect all of her future descendents.

Now Rose needs Quinn's help to protect her great, great, great, great grandson from a ruthless vampire. Quinn had long thought Rose was dead and gone and now she is back in his life and telling him he was a father long ago and now had a grandson. How can he forgive her for not letting him know she had been turned into a vampire and for not telling him he was a father? Why had she stayed away from him all of these years?

This is another great installment in the series. I loved the history of Quinn and Rose. The passion is still there. How they go about learning each other all over again and how they fight to save their grandson is a wonderful adventure. We get to visit again with old favorites of the series and learn new details of one of my favorite vampires, Thomas.

I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series. Tina Folsom is an excellent story teller and will have you captivated from beginning to the end. I know you will be very happy that you read this book.

'SORRY' I HATED ROSE!!!
By Edwina "I Love books"
I am sorry I tried to like Rose, but I found what she did to Quinn for 200 hundred years was unforgivable. Quinn and Rose were married in 1814 Regency England. Quinn goes off to fight in the war with Napoleon. Not knowing his one sexual time with his wife Rose left her pregnant. Quinn promises Rose he will return to her no matter what. Quinn finds himself mortally wounded on the battlefield and a vampire offers to turn him. When Quinn returns to Rose a Vampire she is scared of him and reject him she tells him to get away from her and throws him out. Rose is than attacked and becomes Vampire and refuses to tell Quinn that they have a baby daughter; that her parents made her give up to a family of farmers and that she has been turned a vampire herself. Instead of of Rose trying to find out the truth on her on or even begin brave enough to go to Quinn the man she is suppose to love, but no she believes a strange Vampire who shows up after she killed the Vampire who turned her. She goes and lives with him for years while he uses her. She leaves him and turns to stealing and prostitution to survive. One than Rose did that was good she helped other prostitute to survive on the streets from men who would abuse them. She had Vampire strength and speed, so she would fight off men that attacked other prostitutes. Over the years Rose opens up chains of Brothels and House of Prostitution all over the world.

However poor Quinn is left devastate and very hurt loving and missing Rose and in constant mourning. Rose has made him believe she is dead!!

Fast forward to the future Rose now needs Quinn's help to protect their 4th generation Grandson Blake from a Vampire she stole something valuable from his name is Keegan she has been this vamps lover for years. Quinn after a nano second excepts Rose back in his life and helps her protect Blake. Quinn is so in Lust with Rose he turns from an Alpha Vampire from other books to a wimpy puppy dog lusting after Rose in seconds. I lost all respect for Quinn. He takes all the blame for what happen on himself and it was Roses stupidity after she was turned that cause their 200 year separation. I wanted to scream to him and say this women has deceived you in the worst possible way she is a Slut and a Shank, she's been with tons of men in the past 200 hundred years!!! I wanted to scream at him WTF is wrong with you!!!

The story was good, I must admit, I just HATED Rose, If she hadn't had sex with so many men and maybe just protected the prostitutes and help them get decent homes this would have been a 5 star book for. I hated the way she though to. She kept say in the book she wasn't a virginal, shy Regency Debutante anymore!! How stupid to say that. What decent women would rather be a prostitute and madame then live the life of and young virginal debutante??? I didn't get it!!!

I am Not Highly Recommending this book, but I did enjoy re visiting the old characters and they did play major parts in the story. I loved baby Isabelle. This is why I gave it a 3 star review instead of 2. I really hope Cain's story is next. I will continue to read the series, but I won't pre order it. I will wait and read the reviews first.

The Blade Itself (The First Law), by Joe Abercrombie

The first novel in the First Law Trilogy and debut novel from New York Times bestseller, Joe Abercrombie.

Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian -- leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glokta a whole lot more difficult.

Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood.

Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is noir fantasy with a real cutting edge.

From Publishers Weekly
British newcomer Abercrombie fills his muddled sword-and-sorcery series opener with black humor and reluctant heroes. Logen Ninefingers, a barbarian on the run from an ex-employer who's now king of the North, finds his loyalties complicated when he switches sides and becomes a valuable source of intel to the beleaguered Union. Glokta, a torture victim turned torturer, gets roped into securing the Union's position against both the invading Northmen and the incompetent Union king and council, and ruthlessly wields his skills in attempts to weed out traitors. Foppish Jezal, a preternaturally excellent swordsman, manages to win the contest to become the Union champion, thanks to a little help from Bayaz, a mage with his own agenda. The workmanlike plot, marred by repetitive writing and an excess of torture and pain, is given over to introducing the mostly unlikable characters, only to send them off on separate paths in preparation for the next volume's adventures. "But some things have to be done. It's better to do them, than to live with the fear of them."
By Peter Carrier
**** SPOILERS ****

Abercrombie offers his take on a familiar fantasy yarn, with subtle distinctions and twists to make it his own. While he introduces us to his intriguing setting, more overt world-building seems to be the province of later volumes. In "The Blade Itself", Abercrombie demonstrates a knack for another staple of great fiction: compelling, relatable characters. They are sometimes archetypes, sometimes novel, but they are never boring. Also, they all come with some kind of delicious twist.

Take Glokta, for example. He started out as a Contest champion who was commissioned as one of the King's Own, then captured in battle during the Union's war with Gurkhul (where he was making a heroic sacrifice of himself so other soldiers could escape) and tortured by the enemy for two years. He returns to the Union but, due to the injuries he sustained during his years as a prisoner, he cannot resume his military post. Instead of giving up and going home to become a burden to his family, he joins the King's Inquisition and becomes a torturer himself. While there are certainly other allegories that could be made for the arrival of a man into middle age, Glokta himself summarizes the sentiment quite succinctly: "What a place. Glokta stifled a smile. It reminds me of myself, in a way. We both were magnificent once, and we both have our best days far behind us."

Would this man need to be an Inquisitor to feel isolated or outcast? Of course not; his physical debilitation already confers him that status. How Abercrombie relates Glokta's distaste for everyone else around him is uncanny. Be it Luthar (whom Glokta might well be jealous of anyway, simply due to Luthar's youth) or his old 'friend' West (a man he resents for living, even though that was exactly what Glokta's 'sacrifice' was intended to win) or the head of his own order (Sult is a very special kind of d*ck and it should come as no surprise the highest-ranked inquisitor would force a crippled man to climb several flights of stairs for information easily disseminated by other means).

This is but an example, a single emotional step in ONE character. Abercrombie presents several similar facets in several different characters. True, not every character is this nuanced or developed (not in this first book, at any rate), but that the author presents this ability so effortlessly is... staggering and humbling.

If the characters were not engaging enough to hold interest, Abercrombie makes some quality observations. A few noteworthy quotes:

"Hard words are for fools and cowards."

"That got him to thinking about his life. It seemed a bitter, pointless sort of life now. No one was any better off because of it. Full of violence and pain, with not much but disappointment and hardship in between."

"It could be worse, believe me. It's when you come out before you went in that you really start to worry."

TLDR: a very enjoyable romp. Quite spellbinding, even with occasionally formulaic elements and presentation. The next part of the series is already on the short list of "must read" books.

Think George RR Martin with a bit more humor and the barest hint of hope
By Josh Mauthe
There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky.

And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.

More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent.

If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

The Anachronism Itself
By Michael
Just to preface this... I'm not a particularly avid fan of the fantasy genre. I picked this up because, having just finished the fifth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, I saw it on a lot of 'recommended if you like' lists... and... well... at $2.99, it was worth giving a shot.

I enjoyed it enough to perhaps pick up the other books in the series at some point, but not enough to recommend. Coming back to the item page to write this review I noticed for the first time Abercrombie has a background in film editing.. this made perfect sense in retrospect because the work has a very cinematic sensibility. The way the action sequences are written feel like notes from a screenplay and a much of the dialogue has a buddy-comedy feel. The wry tone of many of the primary (POV) characters (relative to the bumbling secondary and tertiary characters) along with some informal language and sight-gag tropes ("err," "and so on," a nervous man fussing with his glasses, one of the main characters pulling a hulk-hogan) tended to run roughshod over my ability to suspend disbelief and take the events in the story as they came. It was like having a conversation with someone who uses text message shorthand in their speech. duh-buhl-yoo tee eff.

The story was generally entertaining, though (going back to the cinematic sensibility) this felt like the first act. The players were introduced and the conflict established but it didnt feel like much happened beyond getting various pieces in place. There were a few action sequences, none of which did much to advance the plot. Its is perhaps just enough to keep you reading... but any comparison to George RR Martin's works (or Tolkien's) is unfair. Abercrombie's world just isnt as well developed, complex or immersive.

Beyond the Learning Curve: The Construction of Mind, by Craig Speelman, Kim Kirsner

For years now, learning has been at the heart of research within cognitive psychology. How do we acquire new knowledge and new skills? Are the principles underlying skill acquisition unique to learning, or similar to those underlying other behaviours? Is the mental system essentially modular, or is the mental system a simple product of experience, a product that, inevitably, reflects the shape of the external world with all of its specialisms and similarities? This new books takes the view that learning is a major influence on the nature of the processes and representations that fill our minds. Throughout, the authors review and consider the psychological research areas of skill acquisition and lexical representation to illustrate the effects that practice can have on cognitive phenomena. They also draw parallels between theories in physical and biological domains to not only propose a new theory of mental function but also demonstrate that the mind is subject to the same natural laws as the physical world. In so doing Speelman and Kirsner present a new perspective on Psychology--one that identifies universal principles underlying all behaviours and one which contrasts markedly from our current focus on highly specific behaviours. Accessibly written, Beyond the Learning Curve is a thought provoking and challenging new text for students and researchers in the cognitive sciences.

Should be taught in colleges of education

This is a masterpiece on the forgotten topic of learning curves. Colleges of education do not teach this material, so curricular developers and other decisionmakers do not realize that there are known trends to knowledge and automaticity acquisition.
