About the Author
Sana Loue is Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Minority Public Health at Case Western Reserve University. She also holds appointments in the Departments of Bioethics, Psychiatry, and Global Health. Loue is the author of more than a dozen books on gender, ethnicity, immigration, and health. Over a two-year period, the author and her research team followed the lives of fifty-three Puerto Rican women living with severe mental illness as they coped with daily challenges in the areas of family, romantic relationships, employment, social services, substance use, and health care. The team interviewed the women and shadowed them at their homes, churches, schools, physicians' offices, family events, and other occasions in order to understand how their mental illness, their gender, their language, and their culture affected their relationships with others, their understandings of their own situations, and their hopes for themselves and their families.

A cute contemporary for the summer!

There's just something about reading a contemporary in summer. I think that's why I was so pumped to read Paper or Plastic!

The story basically follows a girl named Alexis who recently tried to steal from SmartMart. She ends up getting told that she can work at SmartMart for the summer in order to make up for it and she'd even get paid. This way, it won't show up on her permanent record. Her mom is so enthusiastic about this opportunity and has Alexis take advantage of it. However, Alexis doesn't really want to be caught dead at SmartMart. Alas, she takes the job anyways. At her job, she ends up meeting Noah, who is a grade above her at school and just happens to be so cute. The two of them get closer as the summer goes on.

I thought that the romance was very cute and believable. Alexis liked to think that she was too good for SmartMart a lot of the time, but Noah showed her that working there was really a good opportunity. Plus, she gets to make a little extra money, which is never a bad thing.

I found the reason behind why Alexis was offered a job at SmartMart to be really touching. I don't know why, but this stuck with me throughout the book! The owner's son was actually caught stealing somewhere once and he didn't get the chance to redeem himself, so the owner thought that Alexis deserved a second chance, which is why she was offered the job in the first place.

I loved Alexis's character growth and development. She started out as someone who thought that SmartMart was a place for nobodies to work; people that were going nowhere in life. However, that slowly changed as the novel went on.

In the end, I really liked this book. It was a cute, quick read and I loved the romance!

I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating!

Everything about this book was cute, sweet and endearing. From the characters, even the crazy ones, to the storyline I am absolutely smitten! It was full of surprises and the only thing I regret is reading it so fast! I picked it up in the morning and was done with it before bed time. And that was with having to stop and do other stuff throughout the day. I was obviously hooked.

Like I said though this book really took me by surprise. I had a feeling it was going to be super cute just from the title and the cover alone. It had already been trapped in my radar so that's not what had me surprised. There's so much more going on beneath the cover than the blurb states. There's so much stacked against Lex and Noah that you had to wonder how anything could even be possible. Stuff that goes beyond simply geeky, loner boy and beautiful, popular girl. They're in different social circles so there's two sets of friends in the way. They come from two different worlds as well and to top it off each of them have very different, but very serious issues at home as well. It's just a huge mess but when the two of them are together all I hoped for was that they'd fight for each other. I'm such a sucker.

I was a bit worried towards the beginning because some of the characters were...well pretty odd once Lex started working at SmartMart. But just as they did with her, after a while they all just sort of become endearing and made me smile. Especially one named Ruthie, who in going for complete honesty here, I figured would be the one character to break the story from me. Instead she ended up becoming, after Lex and Noah of course, one of my favorite characters in the book! I feel like everyone would benefit from having someone with her enthusiasm, positivity and excitement in their lives. Well, at least in small doses!

Sometimes there is just nothing like a really good Young Adult romance. Where it focuses on the romance and the stories of the characters without people falling into bed at the turn of every page. Don't get me wrong I read and enjoy books like that too! It's just nice to switch gears on occasion and read something like this. Lex and Noah's romance was beyond sweet and I absolutely fell in love with them. Sure Lex drove me crazy here and there because of how much she cares about what other people think about her but she always seemed to make up for her actions in other ways. And Noah, oh man, I always feel so creepy that I'm crushing on a character who hasn't quite hit the age where it's legal to drool over him...even if he is fictional! But Noah is totally worth it. He is such a good, good person.

If you're looking for a fun and quick Young Adult read that's sweet and full of heart then I highly recommend this book. The summary doesn't even do it justice. A huge thanks to Entangled for the opportunity to read and review this book!!

Not good for leaning UML

I bought this because I needed to get more firmly grounded in UML. I already had Ambler's "Elements of UML 2.0 Style" which points to this book as one possible way to get it. The other book he suggested was Fowler's "UML Distilled", but he claims his own book "goes beyond UML".

I liked the idea of learning UML in a software engineering context, especially one that emphasizes Agile programming. But that's not what I got. This is a long discourse on development models, with some bits and pieces of UML thrown in. Most of it is in a single chapter, with very few illustrations (for a visual language!). Really, UML is an afterthought.

I can't comment on the quality of Ambler's methods for software engineering -- I'm a technical writer, not a developer. What I needed was enough about Agile development to enable me to work with Agile teams. But from my limited understanding of Agile methods, I suspect that this is just old-fashioned software engineering in Agile drag.

So, this book has "UML" and "Agile" in the title, but isn't really about either. Buzzword compliance.

Great book for analysts too!!!!

I am an experienced analyst looking for an antidote to the RUPies use-case-jaundiced view of requirements. This book provided the perfect foil to the sentiment that use cases are all that is in the requirements universe.

It is not meant to be an exhaustive treatise of UML models, rather, it offers a different and, to me, refreshing view of what requirements for system building are supposed to be: agile, responsive and as varied as the projects that they are used on.

Additionally, the writing is light enough to be enjoyed and (what a novel idea) actually read. I have read Mr. Jacobson's books as well as Mr. Rumbaugh's. Albeit their authority status, their writing styles leave you wondering who they were writing for. It certainly wasn't me.

If you are looking for an alternative to the use-cases-as-panacea view of the world, this book will present a good fundamental look at how to get requirements written in a different way. And along the way, you will have a good time reading the book.

New to Winemaking? So am I.

A friend over seas, living in a country where one must make their own, recommended this gem to me last year. Since then, although possessed of no previous knowledge or experience, I succeeded rather easily in making good wines. I also compared the wine from the recipes in Anderson book with highly recommended kits from Vino Del Vida. Although much easier and quicker, the kit product, while very satisfactory according to those who have tasted it, did not measure up to the superior wine made from Anderson's recipes.
Practical suggestions for equipment, where to purchase it and techniques are explained in a straightforward fashion. With a relative small cash outlay and this book, you can be well on your way to an interesting hobby.

4/99 A good beginner book and reference for the amateur.

I'd like to clarify by suggesting 4 stars for a beginner interested in beginning home winemaking and 3 stars for an amateur home winemaker. Regarding beginners interested in winemaking, this is a good starter book with explanations for the ingredients you're using without too much science getting in the way. I feel that this book should be used in conjunction with other books (perhaps Joy of Home Winemaking) to give potential hobbyists a better feel for winemaking. There are numerous recipes for fruits, berries, vinifera & hybrid grapes, and straight concentrates. The reservations I hold against the book is that I suspect it was written more for the west coast hobbyist with better access to some ingredients (ie. certain grape concentrates, brands of yeasts and acids), but that shouldn't prevent anyone from producing wine with this book. (3 stars) Amateurs already familiar with a couple of batches should find this a useful reference because of the variety of recipes and equipement techniques & usage.

Many parents are afraid of seeming too dictatorial, and end up abdicating their authority rather than taking a stand with their own children. If kids refuse to eat anything green and demand pizza instead, some parents give in, inadvertently raising children who are more likely to become obese. If children are given smartphones and allowed to spend the bulk of their free time texting, playing video games, and surfing the Internet, they become increasingly reliant on peers and the media for guidance on how to live, rather than looking to their parents. And if they won t sit still in class or listen to adults, they re often prescribed medication, a quick fix that actually undermines their self-control. A must read to ALL parents and teachers

I've read Dr. Sax's previous books (Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, Girls on Edge) and I've loved them all. When I heard he had a new book coming out, I was super excited. I am a mother to three young boys. I used to be a civil engineer (before kids) but am now a high school physics teacher. I found his books to be extremely beneficial to me as a parent and as a teacher. I found his style of writing to be engaging, almost like he is in the room and we're having a discussion. I have recommended all his previous books to my colleagues, students' parents, and my friends & family. I will certainly recommend this one too.

A Wake Up Call for Parents

"The Collapse of Parenting" presents an opportunity for parents to reflect on their parenting style and (hopefully) recognize how we all need to step up and either reinforce or begin creating stronger bonds with our children in an effort to counteract the alarming trend of children looking to culture/peers for validation and support rather than parents/families. I was pleased to see Gordon Neufeld's "Hold on to your Kids" referenced in the book as it has been one I've highly recommended to fellow educators and parents over the years; while not mentioned directly, the ideas of "too hard/too soft/just right" styles of parenting discussed in the book are reminiscent of Barbara Coloroso's description of "backbone, jellyfish, and brick wall" parents. I always enjoy reading and reflecting on ideas and information presented by Dr. Sax either in print or at one of his lectures. While some would see him as somewhat conservative in his views, he is knowledgeable, has experiences on 'the front lines', and has thoroughly backed up his claims with extensive research... his claims and ideas are very worthy of consideration. While there was no startling 'new' information presented in the book (if you've been reading parenting books), it is written in a relatively easy/quick read format and the solutions presented are certainly do-able. If you are new to the life of a parent or looking for ideas on how to guide your child more effectively and lovingly as they grow towards adulthood, this is a great place to start. Perhaps his will be the voice parents will pay attention to as this current generation grows and matures.

Hands down the best parenting book I have ever read!

Hands down the best parenting book I have ever read! Dr. Sax may make you question your past/current parenting choices (unless you are already a "just right" parent) but after reading this book you will have the knowledge and courage to make the right choices in the future. Dr. Sax not only gives you the "why" we need to change our current parenting styles, but also arms you heavily with the "how" to change things for the better. I will be recommending this book to every parent I know!
