Chloe:
Being recently divorced has left me scorned by love. Now, I dedicate all of my time to my work as an interior designer. When will I learn that it's safer to just curl around a bottle of wine and cry over a romantic comedy?


Vincent:
I'm not sure what drew me over to that dame at the bar, sitting there glaring at her drink like it was the source of all of her problems. Maybe I felt some strange sort of empathy toward that irritated stare. When I approached her with an offer of a bottle of wine and a chat on the balcony, for the first time, I wasn't expecting her to say yes. After a surprising heart to heart, and several glasses of wine, we spent the night together. Though I've only known her for a night, I can't deny that she's set my heart aflame. I want to grow to love her, to see what could come of this. I just wish she'd let me.

Saalman devotes much attention to the role of Brunelleschi's leading patrons, the Barbadori in their chapel in Santa Felicita, Cosimo de'Medici at San Lorenzo, Andrea Pazzi at the chapter house of the Pazzi in the convent of Santa Croce, and the Scolari at the Angeli rotunda. The picture of Brunelleschi that emerges confirms earlier views of him as a traditionalist with a new language. But readers will find here a new dimension of historical precision and clarity in the definition of this much studied architect. Clear lines of demarcation are drawn between the work of Brunelleschi and that of his major contemporaries such as Michelozzo di Bartolomeo and, in particular, Leon Battista Alberti. Saalman gives a significantly new view of Brunelleschi, seeing him less as a revolutionary innovator than as a model of the self-trained professional brought up in the aesthetic and pragmatic traditions of late Trecento Florence and an artist-engineer-architect in the service of a dynamic evolving political organism outgrowing the trappings of a medieval commune as it competed with other regional powers of its time.

It's important to note that the true title of this book is Needlework Masterpieces: 20 Projects from the World's Greatest Museums because Melinda Coss is a very prolific author and you may think, if you don't see the cover, that this is a second book of hers. I wouldn't think it's so important if it were a great book. But especially since I don't, I wouldn't want to waste my money.

I've owned this book for a long time. I wish I could tell you the projects are worthwhile but not for me. I wish I could upload scans from the book showing a few of the projects, the original picture and the pattern but, alas, Amazon no longer allows for customer images on books. Believe it or not, the cover project is by far the best one in the book as far as looking like the original painting. But up close, it's really not that good. I'd skip this one.

This is a wonderful book of Needlepoint Masterpieces copied from museums. I do not feel that it is a book for the novice needleworker. The patterns are very complicated with many color changes and are large pieces when finished. The patterns themselves are wonderful. The Last Supper, the Mona Lisa, Waterlilies, Sunflowers, Angles, and ballerinas just to name a few. To the experienced needlecrafter, this book will make your hands itch just to get started on a new project. Fantastic book!

a comic masterpiece

The previous reviewer was I think a touch hard on George, so I feel compelled to defend the great man's honor, even though nobody is ever likely to read this review (judging from the book's current Amazon.com ranking -- 700,000 or so). Lets get a few things right out in the open. This book, though originally conceived as a serious attempt to provide a concise history of English letters, no longer remains viable as literary criticism. It is ceaselessly crotchety, absolutely conventional, consistently moralistic in its tone, and unwaveringly English in manner and style. It is also fantastically old-fashioned in every way imaginable. Sampson is scandalized by TS Eliot's nihilism. Joyce, to Sampson, is a flash in the pan and, moreover, unreadable.
Ok, then, if Sampson's opinions are ridiculously out of date and his tastes conservative by Victorian standards, why go out of your way to hunt down this tome? One reason is because George Sampson has read everything ever written in the English language up to 1935 or so. This, if you think about it, is extremely funny. He has read the complete works of, for instance, George Wither (1588-1677). (His biographical sketch of Wither is hilariously condensed: "He had a stormy life"). He has an intimate knowledge of the educational reforms advocated by Richard Mulcaster in his two legendary tracts "Positions" (1589) and "The First Part of The Elementarie" (1582). Also, Sampson can dismiss a minor author (or a minor work of a major author) with an abruptness which is laugh-out-loud funny. Here some poor nobleman, probably a person extremely proud of his literary gifts in his own lifetime, is mentioned in passing as being "intrinsically unimportant", there a lifetime's exertions are described as "infinitely mediocore". Thomas D'urfey is summoned from the dusty shelves of Cambridge's libraries only to be accounted "a man of very slender talent"; John Crowne (died 1680) is revived from darkest obscurity to be treated thus: "very little is known [about him] or need be known", and there was Thomas Rhymer (1641-1713) "whose criticism of Shakespeare ... achieves the depths of ineptitude". Colley Cibber's laureate odes "no longer trouble us", just as Thomas Southerne's "numerous unimportant comedies ... need not be named". Richard Glover's (1712-85) "'great' Miltonic performances" will "never be read again, save by the hardier students of poetry", and as for Aphra Behn "it is idle to pretend that [her] plays have great merit".
(Oh it's not all gloomy -- here's high praise for John Parkinson an "ardent botanist and lover of flowers" whose masterpiece "Paradisi in sole Paradisus terrestris, or a garden of all sorts of pleasant flowers which our English ayre will permitt to be noursed up: with a kitchen garden ... and an orchard" deserves to live for the "excellent pun" made upon his name in the title page: " 'Paradisius-in-Sole' being 'Park-in-sun'". A fine pun indeed!)
So many men of letters are dealt with in this manner that one begins to wonder (around the 16th century or so, with over 500 pages to read) whether Sampson is going to run dry of dismissive phrases. He doesn't! He is endlessly creative in this respect and that -- THAT -- is what secures Sampson's reputation, his intrinsic importance, in the history of literary crticism. That is also why the previous (and clearly minor) reviewer was so completely off-base, painting savage Sampson as some sort of literary polyanna, which is absurd. Sampson is nothing if not consisently prickly with the "great" ones and downright brutal with lesser authors.
Oh, and I'd be curious to know if anyone ever stumbles upon this review.

I hope they aren't still using this as a teaching aid

Confession: when I was a wee boy, I used Sampson's History as a sort of Rough Guide to Literature, mainly by virtue of its dizzying completeness. If Sampson really read all this stuff - and we're talking about thousands of writers from the Anglo-Saxons to 1941 - it's a wonder he ever had time to write anything.
Although the book was written at a time when FR Leavis was starting to shift into top gear, you wouldn't know it. Sampson is an almost perfect example of old-style, Quiller-Couchian, terminally liberal-ideological blather. Although he appears to be making judgments about the writers he discusses, he's not really; he's just presenting them all in the happiest possible light. So Shakespeare is praised for his human variety and largeness of temper, and Milton is praised for being sure of himself and a strong critic. Tennyson is good because he's so swoony and mellifluous, Browning is good because he's so energetic and chatty. And so on. He only starts to bristle when the writing gets more self-consciously Modern; Joyce is rapped for being funny without being "genial", Lawrence is damned because he was a good writer spoiled by having so many ideas. With women he's never less than a perfect gentleman, although don't expect him to be elevating Aphra Behn to quite the top of the tree. Likewise with anyone Scottish, Irish, Welsh or otherwise Colonial.
In general, Sampson has one rule: if it's famous it must be good. He's willing to write off the once enormously popular Victorian poet Martin Farquhar Tupper (who lent his name to the main character in the sitcom "Dream On", trivia fans) because Tupper is long since forgotten. He lacks the nerve to write off recently dead writers of comparable mediocrity, because they were still respected at the time of writing.
Sampson's dogged adherence to sweetness and light eventually cloud the reader's brain like a scented fog. His energy was formidable; his erudition is undeniable; his courage and intelligence are featherweight. If you ever wondered why literary criticism had to start getting spiky and radical, here's the reason.
Don't get me wrong. It's quite a nice book to curl up with if you have a migraine. But then, you're probably better off flat on your back in a dark room.

Get ready to get honest with your money....

To those who give it less than 3 stars: Really? This book contains more guidelines with regard to personal finance than most people get in their lifetime! The format was meant to be simplistic for those who didn't get degrees in finance. This is a great tool for getting yourself in financial order and asks the questions we may ask ourselves but are too afraid to ask others. I think the exercises that are given help you to get honest views about your financial past, present and future. A good rating is based on the content and usability not "oh I've been there done that so it is meh". If this is you then do something kind an pay the book forward to someone who could really use it to get to your level. There is no getting rich quick and this is a forward thinking, realistic approach to managing finances, savings and fun! I think this is a great tool for young people starting in high school all the way up to middle aged folks who need a financial check-in (or check up!).

Practical and very helpful

After listening to Alexa on the radio, i decided to purchase her book. This is a well-written book which is a practical guide to financial planning. I gave this book to each of my adult children this past Christmas. As a mom, I failed to teach my children about finances...so this was my way of admitting that to them - and giving them a big boost in understanding how to financially plan for their future.

Sexton claimed that poetry kept her alive through periods of suicidal self-hatred, and indeed her poetry started as therapy, a means suggested by her psychiatrist of documenting the unspeakable. This volume contains selections, many of them familiar, from her eight books. Despite professional success, she continued to suffer, but her work does more than document the pain that finally led to alcohol addiction and suicide. Labeled confessional, she preferred to be called a storyteller, often adopting a persona: "Like Oedipus I am losing my sight./Like Judas I have done my wrong." It's not her fault that they didn't pick her very best!

Okay. No offense to Anne Sexton, but this book just doesn't cut it. The people who did the "selecting" didn't do a very good job. Many good poems which are hard to find are found, but many of her greatest that are easily found aren't even mentioned in this book. And why does Middlebrook always do the commentaries?? I love Anne Sexton and she needs to be portrayed for her art, not for the mentally ill, depressed, phsychotic person that she was. I mean--her poetry is terrific, and personally, I don't think that Middlebrook does a very good job of summarizing Anne Sexton to the readers.

Selections superior to the Collection

I'd seriously have to bicker with another reviewer and state that Middlebrook did a fine job selecting the "most worthy" of Sexton's poetry. Let's face it: towards the end of Sexton's career as a poet, she pumped out more garbage than grandeur...and Middlebrook (whose biography on Sexton, by the way, is among the best biographies on ANYbody) seems perfectly aware of that. With "Selected Poems" in print, scholars of poetry no longer have to plow through rubble to find a few diamonds.

It's easy to read and it covers nearly everything that an interested newcomer needs or wants to know about Linux (but it's also certainly more than just an introduction).
