There once was a happy little possum, the happiest animal in the entire forest, who always wore a great big smile. This jolly creature was content simply to hang by his tail from a tree until he was discovered by a group of picnickers. Mistaking the possum's upside-down smile for a frown, the people resolve to rescue him ― and they turn the little possum's world topsy-turvy.
Strikingly illustrated in black-and-white, this memorable satire of cultural intolerance was created by Frank Tashlin, the famed animator, film director, and author of The Bear That Wasn't. Readers of all ages will appreciate the book's message as well as its distinctive drawings.

One of my favorite books!
By Douglas Millhoff
A delightful story from writer - animator - illustrator - film director Frank Tashlin (1913-1972), full of humor for all ages. The writing is age-appropriate for children (of the 1950's), but the illustration is rich with sight gags and chaotic, hilarious over-the-top crowd scenes that were a probable influence on Where's Waldo.

Passed on to me from my grandparents, I pretty much trashed my copy as a kid, not appreciating it as the treasure it is, but found one a few years ago in near-mint condition at a book fair. I have no idea why this particular title was never re-issued.

From Library Journal
Author Talbot writes that ". . . there is evidence to suggest that our world and everything in it. . . are also only ghostly images, projections from a level of reality so beyond our own it is literally beyond both space and time." Hence, the title of his book. Beginning with the work of physicist David Bohm and neurophysiologist Karl Pribram, both of whom independently arrived at holographic theories or models of the universe, Talbot explains in clear terms the theory and physics of holography and its application, both in science and in explanation of the paranormal and psychic. His theory of reality accommodates this latest thinking in physics as well as many unresolved mind-body questions. This well-written and fascinating study is recommended for science collections.

Review
'One of the cleverest writers around today...his eclectic mind ranges far into the deepest and often most controversial mysteries of modern science.' Fred Alan Wolf PhD, author of 'Taking the Quantum Leap'

From the Back Cover

Nearly everyone is familiar with holograms—three-dimensional images projected into space with the aid of a laser. Two of the world's most eminent thinkers believe that the universe itself may be a giant hologram, quite literally a kind of image or construct created, at least in part, by the human mind. University of London physicist David Bohm, a protg of Einstein and one of the world's most respected quantum physicists, and Stanford neurophysiologist Karl Pribram, an architect of our modern understanding of the brain, have developed a remarkable new way of looking at the universe. Their theory explains not only many of the unsolved puzzles of physics but also such mysterious occurrences as telepathy, out-of-body and near-death experiences, "lucid" dreams, and even religious and mystical experiences such as feelings of cosmic unity and miraculous healings.

Now featuring a foreword by Lynne McTaggart, Michael Talbot's The Holographic Universe is a landmark work whose exciting conclusions continue to be proven true by today's most advanced physics, cosmology, and string theory.

Are individual experiences valid scientific data?
By Damian Nash
This is one of the most provocative books I have read in years. In the first few chapters Mr. Talbot describes the emerging holographic paradigm in science, drawing on David Bohm's work in quantum physics and Karl Pribam's work in neuroscience. I found both descriptions to be fascinating, and especially enjoyed the historical context for the work of these two seminal thinkers. As a person with a master's degree in neuroscience and chaos/complexity theory, I found a couple of his simplifications misleading, but would give him high marks for his overall comprehension of the conclusions of Pribam and his followers.
The remaining 2/3 of the book is a discussion of how the holographic paradigm may provide a rational basis for interpreting a wide variety of phenomenon located around the fringes of established science. He looks at everything from strange historical "miracles" like stigmata and appearances of the Virgin Mary to modern psychic abilities and LSD experiences, from out-of-body and near-death-experiences to UFO abductions. In addition, he compares language used in the modern scientific discussion of holography with the language used by ancient mystical traditions.
Mr. Talbot's writing style is unusually clear and lucid. All of this makes for a highly engaging book. It kept me up late every night for more than a week. I am a person who has had an OBE/NDE (out-of-body, near-death-experience), and can tell you that his description of such events is an astoundingly accurate portrayal of what I experienced.
I am also a scientist, and know that most of my highly rational, empirical colleages would have trouble accepting a majority of Mr. Talbot's conclusions. This work addresses something so completely out of the realm of everyday experience for most people, and probes a world that is normally invisible to the five senses. Hence, objective, empirical science -- as defined by a conventional theorist or practicing technician -- simply cannot address these experiences. They are outside the range of focus of the tool that Western minds currently rely on.
The service that Mr. Talbot provides is a challenge to rethink the conventional definition of science so that it can take into account a much wider range of human experience. What he argues for is the acceptance, as valid scientific data, of the experiences of individual humans, across cultures and throughout history, that are remarkably consistent with one another. These experiences address aspects of reality that are invisible to the skeptical eye, but become obvious to the person who chooses to develop other forms of perception.
As a person who was unwittingly thrown into an OBE/NDE experience, I am naturally inclined to read a book like this one with an open mind, and felt immensely rewarded for doing so. However, if I had reviewed the same book before having my own personal experience of some of the phenomena it describes, I would have reviewed it as a new-age excursion into a realm of fantasy. I am completely sympathetic to some of the reviewers who see it that way, and respectfully disagree.
I believe there is an extraordinary synthesis happening among the realms of human experience, one that can validate each individual's story, however unusual, and also one that honors all the different ways of knowing. I see Mr. Talbot's work as one of the more important bridges yet constructed between traditional science and spirituality, between rational discourse about repeatable, empirically verifiable phenomenon and the quirky, esoteric or mythological elements of personal experience that actually define most people's experience of reality. This book is a "must read" for any passionate seeker of truth.

One of the best books ever written
By Cynthia Sue Larson
I've read The Holographic Universe often, and have gained new insights into the nature of consciousness and reality from its riches every time. I consider it to be author Michael Talbot's most important work, as well as one of the best books ever written on the subject of so-called paranormal phenomena.

Talbot's fascination for finding scientific explanations for psychic and paranormal activity began when he noticed objects moving inexplicably around him, regardless where he lived. He would sometimes awaken to find socks draped on his houseplants, and occasionally found objects in his apartment that he knew for a fact had been hundreds of miles away. His real-life experiences with such shifts in reality combined with his training in physics led him to explore possible reasons for these and other mysterious happenings.

Talbot begins his book with an excellent introduction to physicist David Bohm's concept of the holographic model of the universe, and combines the physics model with Karl Pribram's work on the holographic model of the brain. The result is a marvelous description of a non-local, interconnected and alive universe that moves in response to our every thought and feeling.

I am very impressed with the clarity with which Talbot presents the concept of a holographic universe and how various paranormal phenomena can be explained within that model. Talbot's discussion is comprehensive, fascinating, clear, and packed with relevant and intriguing stories of paranormal phenomena. Out of body experiences (OBEs), near death experiences (NDEs), auric readings, psychokinesis, acupuncture, X-ray vision, healing, and psychic readings are all described and considered for placement into the holographic model.

Talbot presents a wealth of relevant research studies and scientific theories from David Bohm, Helmut Schmidt, Marilyn Schlitz, Robert Monroe, Charles Tart, Larry Dossey, Paul Davies, PMH Atwater, Ian Stevenson, Fred Alan Wolf, Harold Puthoff, Russell Targ, Lyall Watson, Stanislav Grof, and many others.

important even after a decade
By Cooljonnorris
Talbot has created a great book. The Holographic Universe is a discourse on a new way (paradigm) for viewing life and the Universe, based primarily on revelations from quantum physics. While my copy is over 10 years old, and physics has moved forward a bit since then, most of the material in the book is as revelant today as it was when my copy was published in 1991.
The basic premise of the book concerns the nature of holography, and how the Universe and our existence and experience can be viewed through a holographic model. For those who don't know, a holgram or holograph is a photographic image created by splitting a laser beam and recording interference patterns between the two beams after one has been reflected off the subject to be photographed. It has the remarkable property of containing the entire image on each piece if you cut it or break it into smaller pieces. This idea of the whole contained in each piece is the basis of the Holographic principle. It has been found to be very useful in explaining the behavior of many natural systems, hence the purpose of this book.
Talbot discusses many areas of life, including particle physics and physical health. He quotes and cites authorities like Bohm, Grof, Pribram, and many others too numerous to mention here. The book is an incredible resource for a new view of reality as well as a huge listing of people, books, and research to go into more depth on the subjects covered. It is one of my favorite books, and I have given more than one away as a gift. At one time, I kept two additional copies just to loan out.
My favorite parts of the book are the experiment in mass dreams near the end, and the section starting on page 90 dealing with the placebo effect and Multiple Personality Disorder(MPD). The fact that placebo effect can cure illness at a higher rate than many pharmaceuticals should make people sit up and take notice. If that doesn't wake you up, then the research on the health capabilities of people with MPD ought to really rattle your sense of reality darned hard.
The fact that people with MPD can turn illnesses on and off totally destroys the whole Cartesian-clockwork view of physical reality, not to mention the Western allopathic model of medicine. These people can experience radical changes in their biology just by changing which personality is "in charge" of the body. I'm talking total disappearance of diabetes, complete changes in vision (color blindness as well as refractive errors), allergic reactions, erasing the effects of drugs and alcohol; tumors, scars, and cysts coming and going, and more. All of these things are well-documented in the scientific literature (cited in the book). I personally know of a case (not in the book) of a broken bone that would not show on x-rays unless the personality who broke the bone was present! The person who recounted this to me was very much frightened by it, and reluctantly revealed it only when I raved about this sction of the book.
The MPD research alone should force a total redirection of our health research. Of course it won't, because trillion-dollar industries rely on expensive cures that don't necessarily work, and those industries couldn't care less about your and my health, only our ability to pay.
This book is a terrific read and will open your eyes to wonderful new things. It may even open you up to a whole new life, it is that powerful. It is still vital after a decade, and well worth reading. A no-holds-barred 5.

Complete Works of Aristotle, Vol. 1, by Aristotle

The Oxford Translation of Aristotle was originally published in 12 volumes between 1912 and 1954. It is universally recognized as the standard English version of Aristotle. This revised edition contains the substance of the original Translation, slightly emended in light of recent scholarship; three of the original versions have been replaced by new translations; and a new and enlarged selection of Fragments has been added. The aim of the translation remains the same: to make the surviving works of Aristotle readily accessible to English speaking readers.

All of Aristotle - and more
By Rachel Simmons
First things first: there are two volumes here, make sure you buy them both.
The table of contents for both volumes is shown below:
VOLUME 1 CONTAINS:
Preface (Jonathan Barnes), Acknowledgments (Jonathan Barnes), Note to the Reader (Jonathan Barnes), Categories, De Interpretatione, Prior Analytics, Posterior Analytics, Topics, Sophistical Refutations, Physics, On the Heavens, On Generation and Corruption, Meteorology, On the Universe**, On the Soul, Sense and Sensibilia, On Memory, On Sleep, On Dreams, On Divination in Sleep, On Length and Shortness of Life, On Youth, Old Age, Life and Death, and Respiration, On Breath**, History of Animals, Parts of Animals, Movement of Animals, Progression of Animals, Generation of Animals, On Colours**, On Things Heard**, Physiognomonics**
VOLUME 2 CONTAINS:
Acknowledgments (Jonathan Barnes), Note to the Reader (Jonathan Barnes), On Plants**, On Marvellous Things Heard**, Mechanics**, Problems*, On Indivisible Lines**, The Situations and the Names of Winds**, On Melissus, Xenophanes, and Gorgias**, Metaphysics, Nicomachean Ethics, Magna Moralia*, Eudemian Ethics, On Virtues and Vices**, Politics, Economics*, Rhetoric, Rhetoric to Alexander**, Poetics, Constitution of Athens, Fragments, Index of Names, General Index
* - Denotes an item the authenticity of which is under debate.
** - Denotes an item regarded today as spurious, although in the past scholars may have thought it written by Aristotle, and hence it is included here. With this collection, not only do you get all the works by Aristotle that are by Aristotle, you also get the works by Aristotle that are not by Aristotle. What more can you ask?
As a scan of the table of contents should reveal, you really need both volume 1 and 2. They are intended to be together - the chapters are not organized so as to make either readily dispensable. To underline the point, only Volume 2 has an index, and it's for both volumes.
The notes are dead minimal, and the translation from the Greek can often result in some odd sounding passages, the meaning of which the reader has to guess. An example is the very first sentence of the very first chapter, "Categories":
"When things have only a name in common and the definition of being which corresponds to the name is different, they are called homonymous. Thus, for example, both a man and a picture are animals."
I infer that in Greek, the example is clear, although in English it is nonsensical - there was no translator's note, so my inference is all I have.
Grumbling about notes aside, it is great that this collection exists. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in philosophy.
Once again, don't forget to get both volumes.

Reader's Guide
By Rachel Simmons
This review is a sort of reader's guide to "The Complete Works". I've grouped Aristotle's works into logically related sets, provided a list of the works for each set (in the recommended reading order), and also indicated what sets are prior reading for which other sets. Note that I've restricted myself to those works of undoubted authenticity.
To use this review, locate the set containing a work you are interested in, read the sets that are logically prior to it, and then the prior works in that set.
Categories
"Categories" - Is it about words, ideas, or metaphysics? The answer is: yes! This is the most foundational of Aristotle's works. For almost anything of Aristotle's you plan to read, you should read this first.
Logic
"De Interpretatione", "Prior Analytics", "Posterior Analytics", "Topics", "Sophistical Refutations" - "Categories"is a prerequisite. "De Interpretatione" is about statements (and negations), "Prior Analytics" is about deductions, "Posterior Analytics" is about demonstrations, and "Topics" is about dialectical deduction (and proper formation of definitions). "Sophistical Refutations" is really an appendix to "Topics" and deals with various logical fallacies. Mostly, they're not difficult reading, but "Prior Analytics" may have been the most numbing thing I've read in my whole life. The material about definitions in "Topics" has profound importance for Aristotle's metaphysics.
General Science
"Physics", "On the Heavens", "On Generation and Corruption", "Meteorology" - "Categories" is a prerequisite, and the Logic set is recommended prior reading. "Physics" concerns change - the words "motion", "movement", and so on are often used to indicate any kind of change, not just a change in location. "On the Heavens" concerns cosmology. "On Generation and Corruption" is broadly about chemistry. "Meteorology" is about atmospheric phenomena, but includes such things as comets and earthquakes. Aristotelian physics and cosmology, though pretty thoroughly wrong, have a coherence that goes far to account for their longevity. His equivalent to chemistry, on the other hand, is not only pretty thoroughly wrong, but wrong in ways that really, really make you wish that Aristotle had been willing to say "I don't know" a lot more often than he was.
Biology
"On the Soul", "Sense and Sensibilia", "On Memory", "On Sleep", "On Dreams", "On Divination in Sleep", "On Length and Shortness of Life", "On Youth, Old Age, Life and Death, and Respiration", "Movement of Animals" - "Categories" and the General Science set are prerequisites. "Soul" is a word with a great many associations with Christian belief that should be forgotten before reading this set of works; for Aristotle, in this context, "soul" in this context pretty much means the qualities of living things that differentiate them from non-living and he builds up from there. The titles of these are largely self-explanatory. The bad chemistry in "On Generation and Corruption" leads to even worse biology here.
Zoology
"History of Animals", "Parts of Animals", "Progression of Animals", "Generation of Animals" - "Categories", the General Science set, and the Biology set are prerequisites. Aristotle's writings on Zoology are a farrago of careful observation, folklore, and tall tales. Generally, when people want to make fun of Aristotle, they look in these works for quotes. I will resist the temptation to quote any of them here, and just point out that in Aristotle's time, the technical and social means for doing good work in this area just didn't exist.
Metaphysics
"Metaphysics" - "Categories", the Logic set, and the General Science set are prerequisites, with the Biology set recommended, but not necessary. Although "Metaphysics" is famously difficult, you may not find it too hard if you have read the recommended prior works (particularly the material on definitions in "Topics"), and don't get too obsessed about trying to understand his attempts at refuting the views of philosophers whose works we no longer possess. Also, be aware that there are some confusing uses of the word "soul" as well that pretty clearly have a much broader meaning than those in the set on Biology.
Ethics
"Eudemian Ethics", "Nicomachean Ethics" - No prerequisites. Both of these are lecture notes taken by students, whose names grace the titles of the works. The works are overlapping and don't have a real logical order. Of the two, Nicomachean Ethics is longer and covers more ground, and is therefore more commonly referenced than Eudemian Ethics, but the Eudemian Ethics flows better, and is the better one to read first. Some historical background reading about Greek society at this time is recommended. Perhaps surprisingly, after reading Aristotle's Ethics, his "Rhetoric" is highly recommended follow-up reading (the dark side of ethics, so to speak).
Politics
"Constitution of Athens", "Politics" - The Ethics set is a prerequisite. "Constitution of Athens" is a political history of Athens. "Politics" is political theory. Reading "Constitution of Athens" before "Politics" can help provide context for the latter work, although additional historical background reading about Greece in Aristotle's time is highly recommended.
Rhetoric
"Rhetoric" - "Categories", the Logic set, and the Ethics set are recommended prior reading. "Rhetoric" was a somewhat disreputable subject for Aristotle in that it aimed not at knowledge, but at persuasion, and by any means fair or foul. As part of this work, Aristotle expounds quite a bit on human nature, which makes this a fascinating follow-on to his works on Ethics.
Aesthetics
"Poetics" - No real prerequisites. This work, though short, has profoundly impacted aesthetic theory, particularly in the dramatic arts. Everyone should read this.

Review of Oxford's 'Complete Aristotle: Volume I'
By Ryan Mease
I'm pleased that this book is as complete as it claims to be. Between the two volumes, the readers meets with every aspect of Aristotle's thought, including almost one hundred pages of fragments testimonies.

Unfortunately, I also have several complaints...

a) most of these translations are old - early 20th century old - and this doesn't always make it very easy to read them; they are, if you will, 'classic' translations, but I would have preferred to see Oxford hire a new team of translators to assemble and Aristotle fit for the new century

b) there is very, very little commentary - admittedly, here I compare the complete works of Aristotle to the complete works of Plato, published by Hackett. In Hackett's Plato, there are occasional footnotes to aid the reader's understanding of difficult passages. The Oxford Aristotle only notes paragraphs that were excised in the original translations, and, very, very occasional (10-20 times in the entire library) provides more substantial notes. There aren't even endnotes!

c) there are no introductions to give context to the works - again, I compare with Hackett's Plato. It would have been nice to hear the story behind works of disputed authorship, rather than simply placing a * or ** next to the title of the dialogue. It would also serve to consider how each work relates to the rest of Aristotle's corpus

d) the fragments are poorly arranged. I can see how certain fragments might not specifically reference a certain work, but the editors already arrange them according to the works they supposedly reference - what they don't do is formally divide them as such. Instead, they are placed into general categories.

In summary, what I received from my 8-9 months of Oxford's Aristotle was an incomplete experience. I had hoped to see the best scholarship that money could buy, and instead I met with Jonathan Barne's 'hands-off' tendencies. I respect the idealism of leaving a work to speak for himself, but I also deeply appreciate the guidance of those who have read the Philosopher before me.

Would I buy these books again? Likely, no, I would instead go through the hassle of assembling all of Aristotle's work in smaller collections, finding editions of different works that feature introductions, footnotes and newer translations.

d)

Microbiology of Solid Waste (Microbiology of Extreme & Unusual Environments), by Anna C. Palmisano, Morton A. Barlaz

Interest in solid waste disposal has been growing since the early 1960s, when researchers emphasized the potential for solid waste to harbor pathogenic microorganisms. Since then, society has become more interested in the environmental impacts of solid waste treatment and disposal, and how biological processes are used to minimize these impacts. This new text provides a basic understanding of the unique microbial ecosystems associated with the decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW). It addresses the challenges of sampling and assaying microbial activities in MSW and describes preferred methods. The decomposition of MSW under anaerobic conditions in landfills and digestors is described, as well as under aerobioconditions during composting.
The Microbiology of Solid Wastes discusses the need to consider MSW as an integrated system of collection, recycling, treatment, and disposal. A better understanding of solid waste microbiology will contribute to safe and economical solid waste management. Microbiologists, environmental engineers, and solid waste managers will all find this a useful reference.

Fascinating book, annoying production values
By Heteromeles
This is a good introduction to the historical manuscripts that deal with quarterstaff fighting, and as such, it is well worth the price. If you are interested in the quarterstaff, I recommend it, despite its flaws, which I will get to.

This book covers the neglected art of the quarterstaff. It starts with some historical overview, goes on to provide about 50 pages on the principles and basics of staff fighting (probably my favorite part of the book and worth the price on its own). The final chapter talks about training, conditioning, and making your own staff.

The 180-odd pages between beginning and end probably deserve three stars. These cover the texts from period martial arts manuals, translated as necessary and with a commentary. While some of these texts talk about principles, the bulk of the book details particular techniques. The problem is the illustrations. Photo quality varies from quite decent to hideously murky, and many of the images reproduced in the text (particularly from Thomas McCarthy's work) can be found in higher quality online. Given that the text explanations are fairly sparse, the poor quality of many of the images is a major problem. A few of the pictures (I counted three) don't follow the captions, leading me to believe that the wrong picture got put in. This is a comment on editing and production values, which leave much to be desired. Both the author and editor should have done a better job on quality control.

In sum, this book is a mix of good (5 star) and bad (three star), hence four stars. Personally, I definitely think it is worth buying if you want to learn more about this traditional European weapon. Hopefully, the author or the editors at Chivalry Bookshelf will read this review and improve the quality of the next run. If the illustration quality was uniformly good, this book would have had an easy five stars.

Proper Instruction in the Renaissance Technique of the Staff for the Modern Scholar of the Noble and Worthy Science of Defense.
By Michael Chesbro
The use of the staff is an important part of European martial heritage, well deserving to be practiced side-by-side with the sword. In Fighting With The Quarterstaff, David Lindholm presents an excellent study both in the historical use of the staff and offers proper instruction in the Renaissance technique for the modern scholar of the noble and worthy science of defense.

The book is divided into 11 chapters:
1 - Introduction
2 - A Few Fundamentals
3 - Foundations of Staff Combat
4 - The Earliest Masters
5 - Joseph Swetnam, 1617
6 - George Silver, 1599
7 - Zachary Wylde, 1711
8 - Thomas McCarthy, 1883
9 - Christian Egenolph, 1558
10 - Joachim Meyer, 1570
11 - Exercises, Training & Making a Staff

Mr. Lindholm includes copies of drawings from original manuals and modern photographs showing demonstrations of the traditional staff fighting techniques. Instruction on proper size and construction of a fighting staff is also included allowing one to make himself a staff for studying this fighting art. Overall, Fighting With The Quarterstaff is very well researched and written. It is illustrated with drawings of the original masters and photographs from the modern making it easy to understand the techniques discussed.

Entertaining and Informative. Highly recommended for the scholar of the art of defense.

Not quite what I expected
By J. Uden
At first, from the excellent review above me, I expected to find much use in this book, as far as learning the basics of the quarterstaff. I was disappointed to find very little basic information. What information was there was very intelligently and keenly written. You had to really dig deep to discover and learn what could have been explained in very fewer words.

I found the information on the different masters and practioners in the majority of the book very annoying in the fact that, I do not really care who did this and who did that, but more of a general use among the two different nationalities. I feel that the middle of the book could have been avoided, and/or worded different.

Like the reviewer above me, I also found many publication errors. Nothing too major to really throw one off, but I myself am very nitpicky and found numerous errors, that could've been corrected with another editor/editing. Some of the pictures are very good, others are extremely poor, seeming to have been just pulled off of the internet, no matter the quality.

Good points - The book does give a very BASIC rundown on the strikes and guards, as well as information to back them all up, and the use in both German and English traditions. I did enjoy the extended explanation on the Staff itself, and how to make one. I feel that that those were necessary and very well included information.

Overall, I believe it is a very well written book, that includes, some valuable information that could be valuable to some, but not to many. I feel that the title, does not quite fit what I had in mind and the reason I had bought this book.

Brain Gym: Teacher's Edition, by Paul E. Dennison, Gail E. Dennison

Brain Gym Teacher's Edition details the 26 Brain Gym activities used around the world by people of all ages and abilities to make learning easier. This is the revised and enlarged third edition (2010). This is a stand-alone book for parents, teachers and learners who want in-depth descriptions and variations for the 26 Brain Gym activities. Those who need only drawings of the 26 and simple descriptions of how to do them can refer to the small orange book Brain Gym: Simple Activities for Whole-Brain Learning, written in a simple story form that children can understand.

The book references recent research in the field of neuroplasticity as it shows how learners can master the physical skills required for development of academic abilities. The 26 activities, each taking just a minute or so to do, help learners to develop skills of stability, locomotion, and sensorimotor coordination, as well as providing effective tools for self-calming and self-management. When a student can respond to the stress that inhibits the flow of learning, he or she can better access the joy, creativity, and expression inherent in the learning process. This expanded 2010 version of the book offers new information on the physical skills involved in the learning process, ways to use the 26 activities to teach specific academics such as reading and writing, personal accounts from parent and educators, and games for teaching through movement and play.

this is an excellent book - very descriptive in the "hows" and "whys" of the activities, the research, etc. i am using the exercises with all of my music students now, at the beginning of each lesson.

Very important book for educators
By jumpy1
This book is an excellent introduction and manual for Brain Gym. It not only explains in detail how to do the simple excercises, but gives many scientific explanations for how and why they work.

For those who don't know, Brain Gym is a method whereby brain functions are accessed by performing simple physical movements, and it has been found to profoundly improve ADD/ADHD/Dyslexic conditions as well as other learning disabilities. It is a series of exercises (drawn from all areas of movement -- from the calisthenics we did in phys-ed class to the eye exercises of behavioral optometrists, to acu-pressure points) specifically studied and narrowed down after many years of research to those that were found to optimally affect brain functions. Luckily they are all easy and take only minutes (or even seconds) to do, and they get immediate, verifiable results. In my experience they help students and professionals of all ages learn faster, improve memory and coordination, and generally reduce the stress of adjusting to new situations or learning foreign or difficult tasks.
In my own experience, I no longer teach violin without integrating Brain Gym exercises because the students learn so much faster and develop better technique because they are more relaxed, naturally. I have also taught Brain Gym to writers, musicians, actors, doctors, mathematicians, teachers, dancers, investment bankers, producers etc. and the feedback is consistently positive. If you are a teacher and are interested in this kind of thing, classes are recommended, but the next best thing is to have this little book!

Functions of Matrices: Theory and Computation (Other Titles in Applied Mathematics), by Nicholas J. Higham

The only book devoted exclusively to matrix functions, this research monograph gives a thorough treatment of the theory of matrix functions and numerical methods for computing them. The author s elegant presentation focuses on the equivalent definitions of f(A) via the Jordan canonical form, polynomial interpolation, and the Cauchy integral formula, and features an emphasis on results of practical interest and an extensive collection of problems and solutions. Functions of Matrices: Theory and Computation is more than just a monograph on matrix functions; its wide-ranging content including an overview of applications, historical references, and miscellaneous results, tricks, and techniques with an f(A) connection makes it useful as a general reference in numerical linear algebra. Other key features of the book include development of the theory of conditioning and properties of the Fréchet derivative; an emphasis on the Schur decomposition, the block Parlett recurrence, and judicious use of Padé approximants; the inclusion of new, unpublished research results and improved algorithms; a chapter devoted to the f(A)b problem; and a MATLAB® toolbox providing implementations of the key algorithms.

Audience: This book is for specialists in numerical analysis and applied linear algebra as well as anyone wishing to learn about the theory of matrix functions and state of the art methods for computing them. It can be used for a graduate-level course on functions of matrices and is a suitable reference for an advanced course on applied or numerical linear algebra. Review
This superb book is timely and is written with great attention paid to detail, particularly in its referencing of the literature. The book has a wonderful blend of theory and code (MATLAB®) so will be useful both to nonexperts and to experts in the field. --Alan Laub, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles

Totally Excellent Book!
By ralph kelsey
Functions of Matrices is a very useful topic, and this is the only book on it, and it is excellent. The material in it will allow me to expand some research I have done in the topic "Functions of sets of matrices" in new directions.

You might be aware that the author has "written the book" on how to write a good math book ("Handbook of Writing for the Math Sciences", another great book) and this is an excellent example.
